Event Description
Gilbert and Sullivan's The Sorcerer

The Community Music School at Southwestern College will produce its first operatic production with Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Sorcerer, an English light opera in two acts. The Sorcerer will be performed in Richardson Performing Arts Center on the Southwestern College Campus on March 4th, 2017 at 7:30pm and March 5th, 2017 at 2:00pm.

The Sorcerer debuted in 1877 and is a comic story following two lovers by the names of Alexis and Aline in their pursuit of unconditional love and adoration. To ensure that Aline truly reciprocates his feelings, Alexis hires a sorcerer to secretly distribute a love potion to the entire town of Ploverleigh. After a momentary slumber, the village awakens, resulting in utter chaos as each citizen instantly falls in love with the wrong person

The production will feature three professional opera singers in residence at Southwestern College. Our leading lady for the production, Alyssa Toepfer, has been deemed a soprano with "unbridled dexterity"(Kansas City Star) and "creamy warmth" (KC Independent). She has been seen professionally with Wichita Grand Opera, Lawrence Opera Theatre, Kansas City Civic Opera, and Sounds of South Dakota. Our title role will be sung by tenor, Kenneth Clymer, a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and winner of the Dallas-Fort Worth Division NATS Competition. He has also been seen with Wichita Grand Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and the Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Institute. Lastly, tenor Dylan Moore will perform the role of Alexis. Moore has been seen professionally with Wichita Grand Opera as a cover and chorus member, receiving his first role as Nepomuc in The Grand Duchess in October 2015. The production is directed by Southwestern College alumnus, Anna Rosell, who was an intern with Santa Fe Opera in Summer 2016.

The performance will also feature seasoned local and regional singers in the principal roles. These include Charles McKinzie, Deanne Fort, Jack Warring, Hannah Shelley, Jasmine Jackson, and Erin Buster. Stephen Gehly and William Wade will also join the cast as the Page and the God, Arhimanes. The Community Music School will also have a full chorus and orchestra to complete the operatic experience for any type of opera goer. Whether it is your first time or your thousandth time, The Sorcerer is certainly a must-see event of the season.
