About Me: |
I came to Southwestern College nine years ago after living in Minnesota for most of my life. The biggest appeal of Southwestern was the chance to work at a small college with an emphasis on teaching and the freedom to try new things. I mainly teach chemistry courses, but also teach general education courses relating to science. Since moving to Winfield my wife Joy and I have had two children who are now 3 and 6 years old. In my spare time I enjoy traveling, hiking, and reading books. Over the years I have visited 49 U.S. states and 33 different countries. Our children are also great travelers and look forward to our summer trips. One unusual aspect of our travels is connected to being a member of the Highpointers Club. The club consists of people who like to hike and travel with the added goal of climbing the highest point in all 50 U.S. states. Our younger daughter reached her first high point on a trip this past summer. I have been to 32 state highpoints and add them when it is convenient. The attached photo is of my wife Joy and our children Aideen (age 6) and Madeline (age 3) on the Pennsylvania high point. My wife enjoys living in Winfield since it is a safe town and it is easy to get around. Our daughters have started school which gives us a chance to get more involved in the community. In the past year about 120 kids from local schools have come to the college for science related activities. |

Come visit a Chemist! |
The chemistry department offers degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry and they both provide great opportunities for students. If you are thinking about fields ranging all the way from medicine to environmental science I encourage you to visit the college and speak with a chemist. |
