Although the life of the mind is the focus of what I love, I really do enjoy the outdoors. I'm an amateur at fly fishing...just enough to be dangerous. Although the movie, A River Runs Through It, is not about fly fishing exactly, it is a great flick that captures my enjoyment of artful fishing and the greatness of nature. If I had more time and resources I'd take my family fly fishing more. We already camp and hike pretty regularly on a small scale, but we'd like to eventually go to the Rockies and the Sierras consistently. If I had to do it all over again, I'd have probably become an architect. I've always been good at visual art, but never was pushed or motivated personally to pursue that discipline in its various outlets. I am one of those people that pay attention to the progress of things being built and enjoy the look of different edifices. Besides that, don't they make a lot more money than philosophers? One of the most moving experiences I had was a visit to Auschwitz Nazi Concentration Camp near Krokow, Poland while on a mission trip in the summer of 1995. It was extremely surreal. From the deceptive motto on the sign over the entry to the camp reading, "Work Makes You Free", to rooms filled with human hair and shoes, the thought that one of the most educated nations in the world could use their intelligence to systematically and horrifically exterminate millions will never leave me. If you come and have me for class you'll no doubt see my borrowed motto: "The Good, The True and The Beautiful...these are the things that pay." Anon, post Socrates |
