About Me:

Russian history is my specialty. I got hooked on Dostoevsky novels starting in high school and college. One of the figures from my doctoral dissertation, Nikolai Danilevsky, has become popular in Russia since 1991. His book, Russia and Europe [Rossiia i evropa], has never been translated into English. So I am working on a translation, which explains why I sometimes take a while to grade papers.

My house faces the SC campus. I can sometimes be seen gardening and even doing home repairs when I have to. Historians have to be handy sometimes. I walk to work and take walks in the neighborhood with my wife and three daughters. I work at home while my youngest daughter naps each afternoon, and I often need babysitters if anyone is interested.

I've led student groups on trips to Russia (March 2005) and Egypt (Christmas break, 2006-07). Traveling is always a blast, and the process is an education in itself. You can find pictures from my trips on my Facebook page. Whether teaching or traveling, I want my students to make discoveries. That usually involves work. But the secret is, interesting work ends up being fun.
