Origin of the "MOUNDBUILDERS" nickname...
For those many times when you are asked
why Southwestern College students and alumni are referred to as "Moundbuilders,"
here is the information to answer that question.
The
nickname Moundbuilders originated in 1910 when students wanted to be called
something other than "Preachers" or "Methodists." Editorials toyed
with various suggestions surrounding the fact that Southwestern students
lived and breathed on "the hill." "Cliff dwellers" was suggested
but was scrapped for "Moundbuilders" when student Harry Hart wrote "anybody
could just dwell there, but 'builders' shows action." The Moundbuilding
ceremony was instituted by Dean Leroy Allen in 1927 for "Nobody but Moundbuilders
can build mounds. So no other college has now, or ever is likely
to have such a custom."
SOUTHWESTERN
COLLEGE, proud home of the MOUND, proud to create MOUNDBUILDERS!
