Winfield, Kan., Feb. 25, 2002—A concert featuring
the Southwestern College Concert Band along with the Winfield City
and Winfield High School Bands will be presented in the Winfield
High School Gymnasium Tuesday, Mar. 12, at 7 p.m.
Each group will perform a twenty-minute concert.
Then, at the end of the concert all of the groups will combine and
play “Americans We,” a concert march by Henry Fillmore.
“It will be a great concert with a wide variety
of music. Much of it will be light and fun to listen to,” said Charles
Yingling, Southwestern College band instructor.
The evening will also include music by Robert W.
Smith and Robert Sheldon. Smith’s “Where the Black Hawk Soars” and
Sheldon’s “Beyond the Higher Skies” will be featured selections
by the Southwestern Concert Band. The Winfield City Band will be
performing “Under the Big Top” by Robert Jager, “Tribute to Sousa”
by Maurice Whitney, “On Wings of Eagles” by Ed Huckeby, and “Mombo
#5” by Perez Prado.
The high school band will feature “American Elegy,”
which was written as a memorial to those who lost their lives at
Columbine High School.
The Southwestern College Concert Band is directed
by Charles Yingling and a featured selection conducted by an SC
student. Keith Anglemyer directs the Winfield High School Band,
and Frank Johnson directs the City Band.
There will also be two or three people honored
for their dedication to music in the Winfield community. Last year’s
honoree was Mr. Al Hodges.
The concert is free and open to the public.
