Winfield, Kan., March 4, 2002 ¾ Pulitzer Prize nominee in poetry Red Hawk will make three special presentations at Southwestern College March 7 and 8. All presentations are open to the public without charge.

A lecture “The New Criticism: Simple Earth Spirit” will be given Thursday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Wroten Hall. Red Hawk will then present a hands-on workshop in poetry Friday, March 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. also in Wroten. A performance of original poetry will be presented Friday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Darbeth Rehearsal Hall. Refreshments will be served at the Friday evening poetry reading.

“His poetry has a sense of authenticity, what William Packard calls ‘a sense of civilization,’” says Michelle Boucher, director of integrative studies at Southwestern College. “Though he speaks about the Native American experience, it’s poetry about us.”

Red Hawk was the Hodder Fellow in the Humanities at Princeton University and now teaches at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. His books “The Way of Power” and “The Art of Dying” were submitted in nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in 1996 and 1999 respectively.

The poet has two additional published books and more than 80 articles. He has won numerous awards and honors including a National Federation State Poetry Society grand prize. His public poetry readings include presentations with Allen Ginsburg, U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove, Miller Williams, and Tess Gallagher.
