Winfield, Kan., April 8, 2002 —Discipleship Southwestern at Southwestern College has received a $10,000 grant from the Shared Mission Focus on Young People and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church to fund its summer youth ministry internship program. The grant is renewable for up to three years.

The program is designed to help students explore the field of youth ministry, develop critical ministry skills, and help local churches in need of help with youth ministry programs. Students receive extensive training and support throughout the course of their summer employment as a part of the program. Churches in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas currently offer summer youth ministry positions to partner with Southwestern’s program.

According to the SMFYP, the purpose of grant is to fund creative ministries throughout the United Methodist Church that are aimed at reordering the priorities of the denomination as they relate to ministries with young people.
