Winfield, Kan. April, 25, 2002—Karen Bencke, sophomore
at Southwestern college, is going to Dallas, Texas, with Project
Transformation, a ministry of the North Texas Conference of the
United Methodist Church. She is the daughter of Clif and Judy Bencke
of Bartlesville, Okla., majoring in biology with a minor in philosophy
in religion.
She will be living with 30 other college students
from around the country who will break up into teams of five people
and volunteer at an inner city churches. There they will run day
camps four days Monday through Thursday during the summer for neighborhood
kids. On Friday they will participate in ministry exploration activities
such as visiting Methodist Hospital and Wesley Rankin Community
Center.
Bencke is returning for her second year at the
camp. “Last year I saw it as an opportunity to work with kids in
a church setting, and this year, my desire to minister to those
who need it the most draws me back,” she says. She will work in
Dallas from May 25 through July 26.
Bencke is involved with Discipleship Southwestern,
an internship at El Mesias United Methodist Church, Wichita, and
hand bells on campus.
