Winfield, Kan., May 16, 2002 - Southwestern College junior Luke Vierthaler, Dodge City, is the recipient of a research experience for undergraduates grant at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. He will be in Charleston, Ore., from June 3-August 10 studying animal physiology. Vierthaler is one of eight SC students that will study at OIMB this summer.

Vierthaler is majoring in biology with a minor in environmental studies. He is on the SC cross-country and track teams and is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He is son of Charles and Nancy Vierthaler. He will be researching the comparative aspects of invertebrate respiratory pigments with OIMB associate professor Nora Terwilliger.

Vierthaler first learned of the internship from SC professor of biology Charlie Hunter, who will be teaching an eight-week course on adaptations in marine animals at OIMB.

Other Southwestern students studying at OIMB include Jake Stevenson, Newton; Andrea Mohr, Wichita; Aspen Ukens, Hooker, Okla.; Marie Moses, Hutchinson; Penny Cuevas, Arkansas City; Randal Walz, Columbia, Mo.; and Nick Sparacino, Salina.
