Winfield, Kan., Nov. 19, 2001-Southwestern College
biology student Rachel Copeland, Wellington, has been awarded a
$200 research grant from the Beta Beta Beta Research Foundation.
She received the grant for her senior research project on the effect
of burning on seed germination and growth in big bluestem plants.
Copeland will present the results of her research
project this spring at the district BBB convention and at SC’s Explorations
in Arts, Science and Letters Symposium.
“Only about 50 students in the United States are
given such research awards each year, making this a fairly prestigious
honor,” says Pat Ross, assistant professor of biology.
Copeland, daughter of Linn and Jeane Copeland,
is a senior biology major.
Beta Beta Beta is the national biology honor society.
Founded in 1922 by four colleges, including Southwestern College,
Beta Beta Beta now has more than 300 chapters nationwide. The organization
is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of
biological study through education and research.
