What is my login?
To login,
you need to know your 9 digit Southwestern College
ID number. You can contact your advisor or the library
to get it. Your password is the last 5 digits of
your social security number or SC ID, if you don't
have a social security number.

My login isn't accepted.
First,
make sure you are using the Southwestern College
login page. It will have the SC Deets Library banner
on the top like the one on the top of this web page.
Your login won't work for any other login screens.
Second,
make sure you don't have any firewalls on your computer
or network. If you are at work or on a military
base, there may be firewalls blocking the library's
website. Contact your network administrator to see
if the library can be unblocked.
Third,
make sure that the library's web page isn't embedded
in Blackboard. If it is, open the library's website
in a new browser.

I can't access the library
from Blackboard.
The library
website must open in a new window or browser from
Blackboard. Our EZproxy password system doesn't
work if our website is opened within Blackboard.

My login doesn't work in the
SC catalog.
The SC
catalog is a separate system from the databases
and other online resources. You receive access to
it by registering your information for a library
card. PS learners only need to email the library
with your name, SC ID number, and email address.
Once you are registered, your login and password
will be your SC ID. You may change your password
after you login, but this will affect your login
to the SC catalog not any of the other resources.
What is my password for
the SC Catalog?
The default
password is your SC ID number. Since the catalog
is a separate system from the other online resources,
you can change your password after you log in to
it. Contact the library if you forget your password.

Why does it take so long to
load a page? Why is the connectivity slow?
"The Internet is a global
network, basically a vast
grouping of computers
transferring data to one
another. Connection speeds
will vary depending on many
conditions such as the time
of day and the amount of
congestion on the Internet
in general. When you request
a Web page from a server on
the Internet, both the
request and the resulting
page travel over a series of
links that help comprise the
Internet. Points between
links are often referred to
as "hops." So depending on
the number of people
connecting to the servers,
the number of "hops" taken
to get to the site, the
quality of the connections
between each hop to the site
and various other factors,
your Internet connection
speed will always vary." -
from
McAfee Internet Connection
Speedometer
The college and library try to keep the
loading of all its pages to the optimum.
Specific bandwidth is reserved solely for
the library. All the library's web pages
load in less than 1 minute even with a
dial-up connection. However, the library
cannot control the loading databases and ebooks
since they are maintained by
their provider on their servers.
Some other causes may be your Internet
provider, computer, home networking
equipment, or the equipment on the Internet
that neither you, your provider, or the
college owns.
Here are some troubleshooting tips in no
particular order that may correct a slow
connectivity:
- Reboot ALL of your home network
equipment.
- Do a complete virus scan.
- Try using Internet Explorer (or a
different browser if IE is what you are
using). Learners have told the library that
Google Chrome is faster than other
browsers. Links to the download
are at the top of this
page.
- Test the bandwidth between you and
your Internet provider at
http://speedtest.net
- For mobile users, try switching to
an opposite connection type (i.e. wired
if you
are wireless, or vice versa).
- Try connecting via another Internet
service provider (free wifi at a local
library, coffee shop, bookstore, etc). Or, try from work if
it is allowed.
- If using Wi-Fi, make sure there
isn't any interference.
- Various other electronic devices
such as cordless phones, garage door
openers, baby monitors, microwave ovens,
Bluetooth enabled, and neighbors' Wi-Fi
may use this same frequency range. Any
such device can interfere with a home
network, slowing down its performance
and potentially breaking network
connections.
more information
- Water and building materials such as
cinder blocks may also interfere with
Wi-Fi.
- Downloading and streaming music,
videos, etc can also cause connectivity
to slow. Try only accessing the library
without any other operations running on
the your computer. If you are at home,
make sure no other computers are
downloading or streaming as you are accessing the library.
- Make sure no installed programs
conflict with your Internet connection.
- Contact your Internet provider to
see if they have any recommendation on
how to improve your connectivity.
- Networks may slow periodically
throughout the day as more users access
the Internet. Try a different time.
- Browser configurations aren't
known to slow loading but you can speed them up
by blocking the download of pictures and images.
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options
> Advanced > scroll down to Multimedia and uncheck
the "Show Pictures" option.

How do I find a journal article?
You need to check the box in the database that will
limit your search to only journal articles. Each
database uses different terms to denote this. For
example, scholarly (peer reviewed) journals; peer-reviewed
publications; scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed;
and peer reviewed all mean the same thing: articles
from journals.

How long
may I checkout an ebook?
eBooks
checkout for 1 week from eBook Collection. eBooks and
eAudiobooks from the Kansas collection can be adjusted
to fit your need. Items may be renewed.
Why do
I need to checkout ebooks?
Library
ebooks are just like a library's physical books.
The number of copies purchased by the library determines
the number of users that can access the ebook simultaneously.
Publishers don't give unlimited access to ebooks;
they want libraries to buy multiple copies. Thus,
checking out an ebook guarantees that you have it
to use for the set time period.
Why do
ebooks have a time limit before I'm booted out of
it?
Since
many ebooks only have one copy for use by everyone,
a time limit helps to ensure that no one can monopolize
a single title.
What
can I do when an ebook that I need is already checked
out?
If the
ebook is in eBook Collection, you can setup an alert that
will notify you when the title is available. You
also can request a copy of the physical book through
interlibrary loan either through SC Library or through
your local library.

How do I renew a book, DVD,
or CD from the library?

To renew
an item,

Go
to SC Catalog.
-
Click
on "Sign In" in the upper right hand corner.
-
Enter
your SC ID as the user ID. Your password will
also be your SC ID until you change it. You
may change your password for the catalog, but
it will not change your password for other online
library resources.
-
From
the "My Account" drop down menu, select "My
Checkouts" to retrieve a list of all the items
checked out to you.
-
Click
the box next to the item(s) you want to renew.
-
Click
the "Renew" button.
