SC COMPOSITION ALUMNI OF NOTE
Teresa LeVelle
B.Mus.
Teresa LeVelle holds a D.M. from Indiana University (composition, theory, electro-acoustic music), a M.M. from Bowling Green State University, and a B.M. from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. Her music is performed throughout the United States and internationally. She was the 1996 winner of the Indiana University Dean's Prize for Composition with her work, Concerto for Violin and Chamber Orchestra.
Teresa actively pursues collaboration with emerging performers. She has received various commissions, including The Shadowlands: concerto for soprano saxophone and string quartet, for David Dees (World Premiere at the XII World Saxophone Congress in Montreal, Canada), and Kanza (flute, soprano saxophone, and cello) for Lisa Garner (World Premiere at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall). She has been a featured composer on the Toledo New Music Festival, Mid West Composers Symposium, Crossroads of Traditions: The Second Inter-American Composition Workshop, and The Yellow Barn Festival (Composition Intensive) in Putney, Vermont. Her debut CD The Shadowlands (Innova) has received critical acclaim. In 2008, a concert of her music was presented at Weill Recital at Carnegie Hall as the finale of a bi-coastal tour. Her music is published by Dorn Publications.
Mitch Todd
B.Mus., 1992
Mitch Todd, Valedictorian of class of '92, married Jan Todd, class of '91. After graduating, Mitch taught a single class at Southwestern in electronic music--it was to be the last time that his music degree would actually garner him a paycheck. Unexpectedly, by 1994 Mitch and Jan were both enrolled in seminary. As United Methodist youth directors, and later, pastors, Mitch and Jan have written lots of music together, and have released 3 albums of their original Christian music. Mitch has started worship services in 4 different locations, and although his primary instrument is the piano, these days he enjoys playing drums with his 11am praise band at Lawrence First West Campus.
Terry Quiett
B.Mus., 1994
Since graduating from Southwestern, Terry has written, recorded and released five studio albums (in addition to three live albums.) He has performed hundreds of shows across the heartland of the country with his blues-rock trio The Terry Quiett Band. Along the way he has shared the stage with international guitar legends including Jonny Lang, Robert Cray, 38 Special, the Doobie Brothers, Edgar Winter, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Walter Trout, Robin Trower, Tab Benoit, Eric Sardinas, Albert Cummings, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Bernard Allison and Bugs Henderson.
His most recent studio album "Just My Luck" is scheduled for release in Summer of 2011. It was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines who is known for his work with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Steve Miller Band, Huey Lewis & The News, George Thorogood, Luther Allison and Albert Collins.
