WHAT IS CMS?

CMS is a group of highly-qualified music instructors who offer private lessons, music classes, and performing arts workshops for Winfield and surrounding communities. We offer voice lessons, instruction on any instrument (including guitar), and unique workshops such as ballroom dancing, writing music, hand drumming, etc.

Where?
CMS classes, private lessons, and workshops are located on the campus of Southwestern college. All CMS students have access to the practice rooms and performance areas at SC.

When?
Lessons occur at your convenience. Most students take a half-hour or full-hour lesson once a week. Performance opportunities occur throughout the year, including recitals in the newly-renovated Richardson auditorium, mini-concerts at local events, and at private functions such as fundraiser dinners. Some of these events pay for musicians to provide music.

Ballroom Dancing to the Christmas Classics!

Instructor: Jenny Hunt Blackburn, University Ballroom Dance Instructor

The Community Music School at Southwestern College is offering two new ballroom dancing classes, one for adults and college students and a separate class for high school students. No experience is necessary. Jenny Hunt Blackburn will use classic Christmas tunes to instruct individuals and couples on fundamentals of the swing and the foxtrot.

“This is going to be a really fun class, and people who have always wanted to learn to dance can do that to favorite old Christmas music, whether or not they have a partner,” says Hannah Northerns, administrator of the Community Music School. “It would be a great early Christmas present—a gift of a skill that would last forever.”

Blackburn is a university ballroom dance instructor with extensive private studio experience. Her husband, Brandon, is a visiting music faculty member at Southwestern College.

The classes will meet four times: Nov.16, 30, Dec. 7, and 14, in the Winfield High School choral room.  Adult class will be from 6-7 p.m.; high school students will meet 7-8 p.m.  Cost for the session (four classes) is $28 for individuals and $50 for couples. Participants should wear leather-soled shoes (but tennis shoes will work, too) and comfortable clothes to move in.

Cost: $28 singles / $50 couples
When:  11/16, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14 (Adults 6-7 PM, High School students 7-8 PM)

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Community Music School at Southwestern College is to nurture the fine arts community of South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma with rich, musical experiences for people of all ages. Our vision is to encourage excellence in the arts by offering a wide array of private lessons, master classes, ensembles, performance opportunities, and more on the campus of Southwestern College.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Located in the Darbeth Performing Arts building on campus at Southwestern College, the Community Music School (CMS) offers an array of musical activities for students, teachers, and performers of all ages. Any ensemble is welcome to join and be coached. A wide variety of classes are available semester by semester. All band and orchestra participants are invited to join the Southwestern College Concert Band or the South Regional Kansas Symphony by audition with Professor Daniel Stevens. Also, Southwestern has several software programs available for composition and aural skills. There is also a large piano lab available for accompanists and group piano classes.

For independent teachers this is a great facility to launch your personal studio. You can write your own studio policy and use Darbeth to teach all of your students. You can also hold student recitals on campus!

If you are interested in taking private lessons, being a part of a chamber ensemble, learning to hone your improvisational skills, or learning to compose your own masterpieces, the CMS will help you receive the education you need by studying with college professors, community members, or college students.
