<![CDATA[Nichols to Lecture about Latest Book]]> http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/950 http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/950 Nichols Book CoverDavid Nichols, former academic dean at Southwestern College, will give a free lecture about his latest book on Monday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the McNeish Lecture Hall in Beech Science Center.

Nichols’s book, “Eisenhower 1956: The President’s Year of Crisis—Suez and the Brink of War,” shows how Eisenhower, after two life-threatening illnesses – a heart attack and abdominal surgery – and in the throes of a presidential election campaign, masterfully exercised the levers of power to force the British, French, and Israelis to withdraw and prevent Soviet intervention. Nichols uses newly available accounts of secret meetings to enable the reader to look over Ike’s shoulder and follow him day-by-day, hour-by-hour, as he grapples with the crisis.

Nichols is a recognized expert on the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, which he has spoken about in the media – including “Tavis Smiley,” National Public Radio, and C-SPAN – and across the nation. He is the author of “A Matter of Justice: Eisenhower and the Beginning of the Civil Rights Revolution” and “Lincoln and the Indians.” He holds a Ph.D. in history from the College of William and Mary.

Prior to the lecture, there will be an informal reception and book signing in the Beech Science Center lobby at 7 p.m. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

There is no admission charge to attend the lecture or the reception.

<![CDATA[Minors in Political Science and Criminal Justice and Legal Studies Now Offered at SC]]> http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/888 http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/888 The department of political science and legal studies at Southwestern College is offering two related programs: a minor in political science and a minor in criminal justice and legal studies. Both will begin for the fall 2011 semester.

The political science curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and written and oral communication skills. Classes are typically discussion-based and active learning techniques are often employed.

The criminal justice and legal studies program tends to emphasize specific skills that would be applicable in the legal environment, such as legal business applications and knowledge of specialty law subjects. Most classes are based on lectures and focused projects.

Jean-Gabriel Jolivet

“Both programs study the connection between law and politics and are popular avenues to law school and/or graduate school,” says Jean-Gabriel Jolivet, assistant professor of political science and pre-law advisor. “They also provide students with opportunities to develop specific skills of value to a wide variety of prospective employers, including data analysis, communication, decision-making, and research competencies. Those minors are an excellent complement to any major at Southwestern College, including business, communication, English, history, and psychology.”

Jolivet says that internships are strongly encouraged via the Washington Experience. In collaboration with the Washington Internship Institute, an educational nonprofit organization, the Washington Experience prepares college students for their future. During a semester or summer in Washington, D.C., students learn about themselves and their fields through substantive internships, academic enrichment seminars, site visits, and shared housing.

“Students become engaged and informed citizens and leaders who are equipped to make a difference in the world,” Jolivet says.

For more information about the two new programs and the credits that are required, contact Jolivet at (620) 229-6213 or email jean-gabriel.jolivet@sckans.edu

<![CDATA[Matthew Shepard Foundation is looking for a studentfrom the Denver Metro area to serve as a MatthewsPlace.com intern this fall]]> http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/785 http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/785 US:
Since Matthew's death and the creation of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Judy Shepard has spent countless hours meeting young people across the country. Many of these young people have reached out to her to share their stories about the pain and hurt of being teased, harassed, and mistreated by their peers, parents, and other community members for being who they are.

Judy quickly discovered that there is a gap in the information that is being offered to young people, especially those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) and allied community. She felt that one way the Matthew Shepard Foundation could use its voice is to provide young people with a safe place to access resources and information critical to their development and survival.

Matthewsplace.com is that vehicle and continues to be a fitting tribute to Judy’s son Matthew who was killed simply for being who he was. MatthewsPlace.com provides LGBTQQ and allied youth with a site that incorporates cutting-edge technology with up-to-date information and resources about how to live a healthy, productive, and hate-free life.

THE TASK:
As an intern you will be asked to spend 16 hours a week this spring assisting MSF staff with the ongoing maintenance of MatthewsPlace.com. This will include identifying new resources and content to post to the site on a weekly basis. You may also be asked to provide other support within the organization as needed.

THE INTERN:
We are looking for someone who has knowledge of and/or interest in social justice issues, is getting ready to start college or is currently enrolled and has the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

If you are interested, please send a cover letter, resume and writing sample to thomas@matthewshepard.org. Make sure the subject of your email says "FALL INTERN INFORMATION".

We are an English-speaking, grad-school only institution located at the heart of Central Europe, in downtown Budapest, Hungary. We have an extremely diverse faculty and student body, and an outstanding student faculty ratio of 5 to 1. The Center for Higher Education Development, the only widely accepted ranking of European Political Science departments, places us among the top programs. We have both US and EU University status. We offer a one-year US and a two-year EU accredited political science degree. The vast majority of MA students receive a full tuition waiver, a stipend and free single room dormitory housing (with a private bath). Our PhD scholarships are highly competitive. We also offer funding for field research, conference and workshop participation even on the MA level.

In addition to our predominantly research oriented core faculty, courses are also given by distinguished visiting professors. Beyond the strong regional focus we also offer a concentration of courses in fields like comparative politics, political economy, political theory, political communication, voting, elections and parties. <![CDATA[SC to Host Town Hall Meeting with Mike Pompeo]]> http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/716 http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/716 A town hall meeting with Mike Pompeo, candidate for the U.S. 4th District Congressional seat, has been announced for Friday, March 26, 9:30—10:30 a.m., in the Deets Library reference room on the campus of Southwestern College. The event is sponsored by the political science and legal studies department at SC and there is no admission charge.

Topics of discussion will include the economy and national security. There will be time allowed for a question-and-answer session.

Pompeo graduated first in his class at West Point. After graduation, he served with distinction as a cavalry officer in the U.S. Army, leading troops as they patrolled the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. After leaving the Army, Pompeo returned to the academic world at the highest level, becoming a student at Harvard Law School where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Upon arriving in Wichita, Pompeo went to work building a business, founding Thayer Aerospace with three partners. In 2006, he sold his interest in Thayer Aerospace and soon thereafter became president of Sentry International, an independent business that is engaged in the manufacture and sale of equipment used in oilfield and industrial applications around the globe. Pompeo has dedicated his efforts to many civic causes in both Wichita and Kansas, serving on the board of the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Orpheum Theatre, and the YMCA.

“It is an important event because students and members of the community will have to make a political choice and they need to be aware of different candidates and platforms to make an informed decision,” says Jean Gabriel Jolivet, assistant professor of political science at Southwestern. “It is very important that the college be a place of political discourse and the department of political science and legal studies has the mission to stimulate political discourse within the Winfield community. We are pleased to host Mike Pompeo after Sen. Schodorf in February and Sen. Kelsey last November.”

<![CDATA[SC Students Have Opportunity to Intern in Washington]]> http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/660 http://www.sckans.edu/undergraduate/political-science/news/view/660

Southwestern College is offering a new program, The Washington Experience, for students to intern in Washington, D.C.

Similar to the Chicago Center for Urban Life, the Washington Internship Institute (WII), an educational nonprofit organization, prepares college students for their future. During a semester or summer in Washington, D.C., students learn about themselves and their fields through internships, academic enrichment seminars, site visits, and shared housing.

To be admitted into the program, a student must have at least 60 credits earned and a 2.5 grade-point average at the time of applying. It is open to any major.

Jean Gabriel Jolivet, assistant professor of political science at Southwestern, is heading the program.

“This gives students the ability to go to D.C. for a semester or a summer and have great exposure to a lot of different opportunities,” Jolivet says. “Things we can’t do in Winfield, we can do in D.C.”

There are three programs to choose from: Capital Experience, Embassy Scholars, and Go Green.

· Capital Experience, available spring, summer, and fall. Interns in this program will shape policy, attend congressional hearings, write press releases, develop marketing plans, participate in meetings, plan events, or perform scientific experiments. Past intern experiences include: a research intern at the Center for Women Policy Studies, a development intern at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a marketing intern for the Washington Capitals hockey team, a human resources intern for the Corporate Executive Board, and a public relations intern at Edelman.

· Embassy Scholars, available spring, summer, and fall. Recent placements in this program include: an international development internship at the Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs, a policy internship at the State Department N.A.T.O. office, and internships at the Embassy of Mexico and Embassy of France. Although many internships are with international organizations, all students intern in Washington, D.C.

· Go Green, available spring, summer, and fall. In a city with dozens of national and international organizations focused on environmental issues, students will choose the internship that best fits their interests. Potential internships include tracking national legislation for the Environmental Protection Agency, writing press releases for World Wildlife Fund, or researching energy issues for the Climate Institute.

Students are not limited to these opportunities. During the internship placement process, the program coordinator at WII works with students to find internships that fit their interests and qualifications.

For more information about The Washington Experience, contact Jolivet at (620) 229-6213 or email jean-gabriel.jolivet@sckans.edu. You can also read more about the program at http://www.sckans.edu/thewashingtonexperience.

Southwestern College is a private institution granting undergraduate and graduate degrees and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. More than 1,900 students attend classes at the main Winfield campus, at five professional studies sites in Kansas and Oklahoma, or online around the world.
