Dr. Geer received her M.A. in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis. Her research interests include attitude perseverance, attitudes toward emotion, and perceptions of personal and social power. She most often teaches General Psychology, Personality, Human Sexuality, History and Systems of Psychology, Biological Psychology, Emotion, and Learning.
During my years at Southwestern I've learned a great deal about what has and has not been effective in my courses. My students are rarely shy about letting me know. Since this seems to change a bit from semester to semester and from class to class, I tend to approach teaching as a "work in progress;" that is, constantly evolving to meet the needs of the students, the discipline, and the institution.
My primary goal, however, remains pretty much the same: to provide instruction that not only requires the learning of course material but also encourages students to find ways to think about and use that material. My hope is that students will not only learn the material, but will also discuss it, question it, challenge it, and sometimes respectfully disagree with it without fear of embarrassment or ridicule. I believe this is what makes learning exciting for all of us and keeps me coming back for more.
