Collected Stories: Harvey County

The Doty School

"...My family then [1939] moved north about 2 miles, and I attended Doty School in Harvey County, where there were about 6-7 students. My brother Ben reported Doty to you last week. He was incorrect in naming Wright School. I believe he reported it was called White School. I attended Doty School from 1940 to 1941, where I finished the eigth grade. My teacher's name was Miss Riesser. Students were Forest Spencer and his brother (don't remember his brother's name), Johnnie Hebert..."

"...I attended school at Doty School, Darlington Township, Harvey County, Kansas from 1946-1950, when it closed. It was located 1 mile west of Highway 81, 1 mile north of Sedgwick County Line road. Teachers were Virginia Hollister, 1946-7, Cora Umbarger, 1947 who didn't last out the year, and Alice Koerner, 1947-1950. I do not know when it opened. I have pictures from 1947 that I will try to email. My name is Ben Daniel Mittman. Students during those years were Johnnie Hebert, Verna and Vera Onley, Glenn and Marilyn Clark, my sister Anita and brother Leon Mittman, and others I don't remember..."
