Collected Stories: Kingman County
The Varner SchoolSubmitted by Mary VoswinkelMy mother, June Hoffman Wigley, taught at the Varner School in 1921, 1922. She and her seven brothers and sisters all attended the school and then completed their education at Kingman High School. When Mom graduated from High School, she took the state tests which allowed her to teach. The school was in existence until the early 1950s. The last teacher was Helen McClure who was also a product of the school. Mom died recently, and I am just now going through all her keepsakes. A couple of the books she used are in her things. If I find additional information I will submit. I have also talked with her about a school south and east of Kingman which was called MT. Belvieu. It was gone long before my earliest memories of summers in Kansas. Varner is between Kingman and Pretty Prairie, Kansas. |
