Collected Stories: Lincoln County

Lincoln County Schools

Submitted by Wanda Hobbs Stuart

This is information that I got from my mother, Anna Caroline Miller Hobbs, born in Kansas in 1913. She started school at Star School, 1 mile west of Barnard, in Scott Township. Her teacher, from the fall of 1920 until the spring of 1922, a period of 2 years, was Lena Gaddis. She finished her elementary education at Union 4, in Battle Creek Township Section 7. Her teachers were: Frances Spence 1922-1923, Harvey Walgust 923-1924, Bertha Hunter 1924-1925, Harvey Walgust 1925-1926, Stella Spence 1926-1928. My father Calrence Blaine Hobbs, went 8 years to Prairie Grove School, Battle Creek Township, Section 28. That was in Lincoln County. I believe that Union 4 was also in Lincoln county. My father's teachers were: Mayme Dillet, Roy Dillon, and Lillian Sours. Mayme Dillet taught only part of the year (probably 1919 or 1920) then Roy Dillon finished out the school year. Lillian Sours was my father's teacher 2nd grade thru the 8th grade.

I also went to one-room schools in Kansas, all in Lincoln County. Prairie Grove School, 1941-1943, teacher was Betty Schneider. Trail Creek School, 1943-1945. My third grade teacher was Lois Wild, and my fourth grade teacher was Goldie Nelson. Sunrise school, 1945-1947. My fifth grade teacher was Clarissa Webb, and my sixth grade teacher was Phyllis Meier.
