Elmhirst School

Submitted by Dave Warnken

Elmhirst School in Lincoln Township.

The building still exists and was restored in 1998. The last intact one room school in Reno County owned by my family on family farm. Restored in 1998. Not converted into home. Used for storage, in excellent condition.

Martin School

Submitted by Karen Martinez

Martin SchoolThe Martin School District's one room school-house closed its doors in 1960. Located 4 miles south of Obee Grade School from 1949 to 1960, the school's building, playground, equipment, big bell, furnace and furniture were auctioned in August of that year. The 15 students of the small school were reassigned to Haven Grade School. In its 11 years of existence, enrollment was, at the most, 34 students in the school's first through eighth grades.

Alice Haskard BoyleAlice Haskard Boyle of Hutchinson, was the school's teacher for the last 6 years of the 11 it was in existence. She was in her mid 40s when she taught at the school . Born in Enterprise and raised in Minneapolis, she was a graduate of Liberal High School.

Martin SchoolThe small white building, which served as an institution of learning, was built for mere $650 in 1928, said Allen King, a member of the Martin School District's School board from 1944 to 1960.

Reflecting on the school's brief but memorable history, 54 former students, parents and teachers attended the schools's 37th reunion held at Mennonite Friendship Manor in South Hutchinson Feb. 1.
