No. 6 School
Submitted by Cliff Chamney
I and many of my family are graduates of the former "No. 6" school located at what is now called 23rd St. and Iowa St., now in Lawrence, KS. There was an official alphabetical name (I think a notable person's surname) for the school, but I do not remember it and it was never used in common parlance.
In the list of peoples' names I found my paternal grandfather's name, H. M. (for Harold Marcus) Chamney. I remember hearing that he was president of the school board when the brick structure was built. I think my first grade teacher was Mrs. Emma Berg, later Superintendent of Schools of DG County. The school was divided into 2 classrooms when I went into the 4th grade, I think. That would have been about September 1946, My father, Edward Harold Chamney, was on the school board for several years around that time. The principal was Mrs. Veda Stanton from then through at least my graduation from the 8th grade in 1951.
