Charles Maddin to Receive Servant Leader Award at Natural Science HOF Induction

Southwestern College Board of Trustees member Charles Maddin will be presented the Servant Leader award during the Natural Science Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 13.  Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the Deets Library.  The induction ceremony will begin at the conclusion of the meal, approximately 6:15 p.m.

Maddin began his employment with the Dowell Division of the Dow Chemical Company in 1953, and was manager of analytical laboratories until 1981. He retired from the company in 1984 as environmental manager but continues as a consultant for Dowell Schlumberger.

“Charlie has been a tremendous friend of the college and a diligent and hard-working member of the Natural Science Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees, says Southwestern College President Dick Merriman.  “We owe him a lot, and it will be a pleasure to recognize and thank him for all he has done for Southwestern and our students.”

His connection with Southwestern College began through his friendship with famed alumnus scientist, Wayne White ’27, who was a member of the college’s natural science advisory council.  White was unable to attend one of the council’s meetings and asked Maddin to represent him.  He enjoyed the interaction so much that he continued to attend.  He has served on the advisory council for over a decade, bringing his expertise as an analytical chemist to the development of SC’s science programs. Maddin provided an invaluable volunteer service to the college in the late 1990s during the remodeling of Mossman Hall.  He identified, labeled, and arranged for disposal of years of accumulated chemicals and supplies, preparing the former science building for renovation.

Maddin serves on the academic affairs committee for Southwestern. He and his wife, Dorothy, have endowed a scholarship fund for chemistry majors.

The new members being inducted into the hall of fame are Douglas Fort and Harold Taylor (deceased).
