SCPS Offers Rural Healthcare Administration Certificate

Southwestern College Professional Studies will be offering a new graduate certificate in rural healthcare administration at the beginning of the 2013 spring semester.

The graduate certificate in rural healthcare administration is designed to not only prepare people for leadership positions in hospitals, critical access facilities, healthcare facilities, and nursing facilities, but also to help promote networks among learners, reducing the isolation that can be part of the rural healthcare administration job. Learners may be preparing for a promotion to a leadership position, or may already be in a leadership position looking to enhance their skills.

“This certificate feeds into our leadership or strategic management degree programs for persons who would like to earn master’s degrees, but there already are people out there who have degrees and who never thought they would be doing this kind of work,” says Pamela Monaco, vice president and chief academic officer for Southwestern College Professional Studies. “They’re finding healthcare is so specialized that they need an entirely different knowledge base to be effective administrators, and we can provide that knowledge.”

Courses are delivered online with some field experience, typically at the beginning and end of the program. The online courses will include opportunities to build relationships, share current issues, and interact with one another in real time.

Classes taken in the rural healthcare administration certificate program can be applied toward a Master of Science in Leadership or a Master of Science in Management at Southwestern College Professional Studies.
