SC Diversity Council to Host Several Events to Commemorate Martin Luther King Day

The Southwestern College diversity council is hosting several activities to recognize Martin Luther King.  Martin Luther King Day is Monday, Jan. 20.

• Monday, Jan. 20, there will be a community freedom march beginning at 6 p.m. in the Jim Farney Family Plaza located at the south end of Richard L. Jantz Stadium.  The community march will symbolize solidarity and reflect on the marches of the civil rights movement. The march will conclude at the Cole Mound Plaza with a commemorative rock dedication celebration. Participation in the march is free and open to the public and all SC students. 

• Wednesday, Jan. 22, a commemorative celebration will be held inside the Richardson Performing Arts Center in the Christy Administration Building.  The event will begin at 7 p.m., and will feature student performances, gospel selections by Wichita’s New Destiny Ensemble, and a keynote address by Dellrose United Methodist Church pastor Kevass Harding.

• Thursday, Jan. 23, Southwestern College will present the documentary “In Remembrance of Martin” at 6 p.m. in Mossman Hall room 101.  Comments from family, friends, and advisors fill this remarkable documentary honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coretta Scott King joins the Reverend Ralph Abernathy, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Andrew Young and a host of others, who recall Dr. King's career and trace his leadership in the civil rights movement. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Southwestern College diversity council is also hosting a Twitter contest from Jan. 20-23.  The contest is for Southwestern College students as well as any high school student from Cowley County. 

“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is known to the world as a symbol of justice, equality and peace,” says Lai-L Clemons, director of campus life and chair of the diversity council.  “Yet, many don’t truly understand the power of his legacy and how it is relevant today.  In 140 characters explain how Martin Luther King and his legacy are relevant in 2014.”

Beginning at 8 a.m., answers should be tweeted using the #SCMLK hashtag.  The contest concludes at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.  The diversity council will select three winners and they will be notified through the Jinx Tale, a daily e-mail sent out by the college, on Monday, Jan. 27.  Winners will receive a Visa gift card.

All the events are open to the public and there is no admission charge.
