1940
Russell "Sticker" Briar '42 will be posthumously inducted
into the Newton High School Hall of Fame at a ceremony during the
2000-01 school year. Newton was 73-10 with Russell in the basketball
line-up; during his freshman year (1931) Newton had its only undefeated
basketball season in the history of the school, winning a state
championship. He was named all-Ark Valley league in 1932, 1933 and
1934. At Southwestern Russell played basketball and was captain
of the 1939 team. It was this team that went on to win the National
Intercollegiate Tournament in Kansas City.
Rosemarie (Grow) Taylor '48 recently received the Yellow
Rose of Texas award from the Constance Allen Heritage Guild for
Lifetime Learning in San Antonio, Texas. Rosemarie is a retired
teacher. She taught for 30 years, the last 18 as a special education
teacher at Randolph Air Force Base High School in San Antonio.

Jake and Elaine (Baird) Brennan '50 '49 celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2000, with a reception at the
home of their son. The event was hosted by their children and families:
Alan '75 and his wife, Cathe; Eddie and Cindy (Brennan) Kearns '79
'79, and Deb '80.
Eldon and Glenna (Davis) Herd '50 '54 celebrated their
45th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows and a family
dinner. The couple was married July 10, 1955, in Sublette, Kan.
Deryl Schuster '57 was recently honored by the Small Business
Administration in Washington, D.C. On May 16, 2000, Aida Alvarez,
SBA administrator, presented him the Administrator's Lifetime Achievement
Award. The honor is the highest award given by the administrator.
Wendell Piehler '58 played the organ at First United Methodist
Church, Lyons, in dedication of its renovation. Wendell had grown
up in Lyons and took his first organ lessons from Thelma (Ham)
Ernst '30 on the Lyons organ in 1953, before majoring in pipe
organ at Southwestern College. Last October he retired from Yale
University after 20 years of service, first as an assistant university
organist and later as business manager for the Yale Medical School.
Art and Sharyll Modschiedler '59 '62 have decided to scale
back their professional activities. After 21 years teaching in the
Shawnee Mission school district Sharyll has decided to retire. She
will miss the excitement and challenge of teaching the elementary
gifted student. Art will continue his business with insurance and
estate planning but will have more time for travel and personal
interests. As of July 15, 2000, Sharyll and Art moved to the shores
of Beaver Lake near Eureka Springs, Ark. Three years ago they built
a lake home to use as a retreat from city life, but have come to
love the area enough to make it their permanent home.

Billie Day '60 made her eighth trip to Bosnia in April
2000 to serve as an elections supervisor. Additionally, she was
also recently elected president of the Friends of Sierra Leone.
Billie has served the group the past two years as full-time pro
bono government relations director. She is interested in hearing
from anyone concerned about Sierra Leone.
Ralph Hanna Jr. '60 was recognized as the Outstanding Community
Builder at the Jan. 27, 2000, banquet of the Winfield Area Chamber
of Commerce. The award was presented in recognition of his years
of outstanding leadership in the Winfield community.
Bruce Birch '62 has been named to the Woodrow W. and Mildred
B. Miller Chair in Biblical Theology at Wesley Theological Seminary,
Washington, D.C. Having joined the faculty at Wesley in 1971, he
has served as dean of the school since 1998. Bruce is considered
one of the world's leading scholars in Old Testament studies.
Ken Sargeant '64 is one of the five founding members of
the Florida Citrus Model Train Society. He currently serves as president
of the organization. The society's activities can be checked out
at www.citrustrains.com/. Ken has been an educator for 35 years.
He also served as head football and track coach on the high school
and college levels before getting into administration. He is currently
assistant principal at South Plantation (Fla.) High School.
Gene Gruver '65 has been appointed academic dean on the
spring 2001 voyage of Semester at Sea, an undergraduate education
program that takes students around the world aboard a floating university
campus and stops in nine ports of call. He and his wife, Marcia
(Speer) '67 live in Pittsburgh, Penn., where Gene teaches economics
at the University of Pittsburgh and Marcia is director of alumni
affairs for The Institute for Shipboard Education.
Marvin Estes '66, former assistant superintendent of schools
in Winfield USD 465, has been appointed superintendent.
Dayna (Nittler) Richardson '67 recently received the Outstanding
Staff Developer of Kansas award from the Kansas Staff Development
Council. The award was presented at the organization's annual conference
in Wichita in April. An educator for 34 years, Dayna currently serves
as assistant superintendent of instruction for Buhler USD 313.
Bill and Donna (McClaren) Dyar '68 '68 have moved from Kiowa
to Florence, Kan. In Kiowa, Bill was pastor of the Kiowa United
Methodist Church and Donna ran the Whistle Stop Diner. Bill filled
in as a cook at the diner and used a back room for counseling since
residents of the small town would assume that someone had gone to
the diner to have something to eat. After the move Bill, former
vice president for institutional advancement at Southwestern College,
will pastor the Florence and Aulne United Methodist Churches. Their
son, Ken, is a sophomore at Tulane University in New Orleans.
Diane (Dobson) Eskridge '68, former secretary in the Center
for Teaching Excellence, recently exhibited 13 pieces of art at
Beatriz Café in Winfield. The exhibit included works in colored
pencil, watercolor, mixed media, and acrylics as well as assemblages.
Tom Winters '68 is running for reelection to the Sedgwick
County (Kan.) Commission. He is a Republican candidate from District
3.
David Juhlin '69 has been teaching industrial arts and coaching
cross country at Winfield High School. For the 2000-01 school year
he will take on the additional duty of coaching track.

Dick Jespers '70 has taught for the Lubbock (Texas) Independent
School District for 25 years. He received his M.A. in English from
Texas Tech University in 1986 and has been teaching English to talented
and gifted students for eight years at Lubbock High School, an academic
magnet (23 National Merit Finalists in 1999). In the fall of 2000
he will embark upon the inaugural year of LHS's entrance into its
association with the International Baccalaureate program by teaching
11th grade English and by serving as part-time building coordinator
for IB. IB is becoming as much of a benchmark for students as the
College Board's AP/PSAT program. Many colleges and universities
now administer credit for students with IB diplomas, and Dick and
his colleagues are excited about the possibilities.
Lyn (Gagnebin) Bement '73 is now a full-time instructor
and director of the language laboratory at Idaho State University,
Pocatello, Idaho. Her husband, Doug, continues to work for FMC as
a project manager. Their son, Bret, took a trip to Argentina in
the summer of 2000 and is a senior in high school this fall.
George and Susan (Richardson) Lowe '74 '95 celebrated their
25th wedding anniversary on July 19, 2000. Susan is director of
alumni programs at Southwestern College.
Lee Zwink '76, his wife, Cathy, and their son, Sammy (2½),
were assigned stateside in early July 2000. They are living in a
Baptist Association house in Colorado and speaking in area churches
regarding their experiences as missionaries in Chile. A new addition
to the family was scheduled to arrive in August. Starting in September
the family will begin traveling, visiting various churches and with
friends and family. In mid-October they will be in Richmond, Va.,
to participate in a conference for missionaries. They will then
return to Colorado for a missions celebration in the Denver area
followed by a trip to the Southwest. In early 2001 the family will
return to Chile.
Jan McDaniel '78, former programmer and systems analyst
at Southwestern College, has been ordained deacon in the United
Methodist Church. The ordination service was held as part of the
2000 session of the Kansas West Annual Conference. Jan continues
as pastor of the Hardtner and Capron (Okla.) United Methodist Churches.
She has served there since July 1998.
Wiley Wilcox '78 was honored with the Distinguished Service
Award from USD 470 Arkansas City. Wiley was president of the school
board for the 1999-2000 school year. Cindy (Wesley) Marion '79 has
accepted the position of language arts teacher at McPherson High
School.

Chuck Wright '80 has been elected vice president of the
USD 465 Winfield board of education.
Becky (Oliver; Hadsall) Brock '81 and her husband, Jimmy,
participated in a Volunteer in Mission Trip to Rosebud Reservation
in Mission, S.D.
Kandice Joyce '81 reports that though she is an ordained
minister in the United Methodist Church she is currently on family
leave. Her 16-month stint as a stay-at-home mom with her son Noah
(3) and daughter-by-marriage, Kayla (9) will, however, end soon.
Her spouse, Michael Humphreys, is beginning a Ph.D. program at Drew
University.
Rick Horn '82 is now serving as executive editor of the
Fremont Tribune, a 10,000-circulation daily newspaper serving northeast
Nebraska. He assumed the duties in April 2000.
Rob Fields '83 has been appointed head boys' basketball
coach at Winfield High School. He is leaving a similar position
at Guymon, Okla.
Paul Bean '85, vice president for institutional advancement
at Southwestern College, graduated from Baker University in May.
He was awarded the master of business administration degree.
Russell Weihe '86 reports that he switched jobs in June
2000 and is now working for Slazenger Golf, USA. His territory consists
of the states of Tennessee and Kentucky. Jamie Ybarra '86 has been
named principal of Kennedy Elementary School, Wellington. He had
previously worked in the district as an elementary physical education
instructor.
Ted Kaste '87 reports that he works in a 14-bed recovery
cardiac open-heart intensive care unit. The unit recovers over 1,000
coronary bypass graft (CABG) surgeries per year with one of the
nation's lowest death rates.
Genavie Royalty '87 reports from South America that on
New Year's Eve 1999 she completed her move to Villarrica. In her
ministry as a missionary she has been kept busy with a youth camp,
an all-church camp, teaching English to 28 Paraguayan students,
and conducting a seminar for Sunday school teachers. She also participated
in a riverboat ministry on the Paraguay River, an area to which
her father had ministered about 50 years previously. As a nurse
she is constantly dealing with various tropical diseases and attempting
to treat large populations with minimal supplies.

Diane (Hartman) Glasgow '90 and her husband, David, celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary on June 21, 2000. Diane teaches at
Trinity Lutheran School in Winfield. David is employed by Howmedica
Osteonics in Wichita.
Kent Lundy '90 and his wife, Marti, have moved to Huntington,
Ind., where Marti is the new pastor at the United Methodist Church.
Kent continues as the Minister to Youth and Their Families at Aldersgate
United Methodist Church, Fort Wayne, Ind. With the help of Marti
as worship leader, and seven small-group leaders, Kent oversaw ministry
to over 70 students per week this past school year. He hopes to
double that number next year with the addition of seven more small
group leaders. In his spare time Kent is father to Joshua (4) and
Nathan (3) and officiates men's college basketball. He currently
officiates in four different athletic conferences ranging in size
from NAIA Div. II (Southwestern's size) to NCAA Div. II. He hopes
to one day officiate at the NCAA Div. I level.
Kay (Smith) Lydick '91 recently joined the staff of the
Life Care Center of Burlington, Kan., as the new executive director.
She will oversee the business and operations of the center.
Jan (Palmer) and Mitch Todd '91 '92 have produced a CD titled
"Love Matters." They have been writing songs since they were students
at Southwestern College and now, with the backing of the Kansas
East Conference Congregational Growth and Development Committee
and the support of Paula Sauder of Emporia, they have recorded 16
original songs.
Bryan Davis '93 has purchased the medical clinic previously
owned by the late Jorge Sturich and his wife, Terri (Sinclair)
'95. He began seeing patients on July 17, 2000.
Mark Detter '92 has recently begun serving as city administrator
of Dexter, Kan. He had previously been working as director of community
development in Newton.
John Zink '92 reports he worked with the Durango Shakespeare
Festival in which he played Orlando in As You Like It. After playing
Hortensio in Taming of the Shrew he joined the Phoenix Productions
as properties master for Godspell.
Tosca (Sullivan) and Britt Ford '93 '94 are both working
for the National Rifle Association. Tosca, former secretary in the
student life office at Southwestern College, is now a facility manager
in the administrative services division. Britt is a special projects
administrator in the field operations division. (see also births)
Don Gifford '93 recently published (March 2000 issue) a
humorous article about the practice of law in the military in the
Tulsa Lawyer, a legal periodical. The article was titled "JAG Edge:
The Legalities of the Properly Shined Boot." Don leaves for Bosnia
to be the lone defense attorney for all of Bosnia and Kosovo (U.S.
Army JAG Corps) at the end of July and will be at Eagle Base outside
of Tuzla.
Brian Hoberecht '93 is head men's basketball coach at Dodge
City Community College.
Earlene Logan '93 was a member of the spring 2000 graduating
class at Wichita State University. She received her master's degree.
Earlene is a kindergarten teacher at Frances Willard Elementary
School in Arkansas City.
Glenna (Wingfield) Burden '94 and David Armbrust '99 were
married April 22, 1999. Glenna and David both teach and coach at
Arkansas City High School.
Kim Cornett '94 and Bryan Brotton '02 were married June
3, 2000.
Chris Douglas '94, Moundbuilder football/track assistant
coach at Southwestern College, has accepted the position of running
backs coach at Abilene Christian University. ACU is an NCAA Division
II school.
Cetra (Oberhelman) Horton '95 graduated from the University
of Kansas on May 21, 2000, with a doctor of pharmacy degree. She
is working at Scott City Pharmacy, Scott City. Her husband, Curtis
'94, is a teacher and assistant football coach at Scott Community
High School.
Susan (Richardson) Lowe '95 is the new director of alumni
programs at Southwestern College. She comes to Southwestern from
the Winfield public schools where she was coordinator of volunteer
services for the past two years.
Sarah (Dillingham) Shipman '95 was a Republican candidate
for the Harvey County register of deeds. She is currently a closing
officer with Regier Title Inc. in Newton. Her husband, Scott
'94, is a history teacher at Newton High School.
Scott Sisson '95 was recently chosen state 5A Tennis Coach
of the Year by his fellow Kansas coaches. He was recognized Aug.
3, 2000, at the third annual Kansas Teaches Hall of Fame dinner
in Topeka. It was noted that Scott had led Winfield to a third-place
finish at the 1999 state tennis tournament. He also coached Winfield
to a first-place finish in the Ark Valley League each of his first
five years at the school. Scott has been head tennis coach at Winfield
Middle School since 1994. In 1996 he took over as head coach at
Winfield High School while continuing his role at the middle school.
Rachel Daniel and David Glantz '96 '96 were married July
1, 2000. Rachel is a human resources specialist for Toyota Motor
Manufacturing of Indiana. David recently completed the requirements
for a master of science degree in software engineering at Kansas
State University, graduating May 12, 2000.
Sid Fleming '96 and Sarah Schmidt were married April 15,
2000, at Botanica Gardens in Wichita. Sid is a project coordinator
at Servi-Tech Laboratories. Sarah is an ag/environmental technician
at Servi-Tech.
Scott and Stacey (Houlden) Jagodzinske '96 '98 have moved
to Leavenworth, where Scott is now director of youth ministries
at First United Methodist Church. Stacey is doing substitute teaching.
Chris King '96 and Jessica Harken were married June 17,
2000, in Waterloo, Iowa. Chris is a marketing consultant for FAC
Marketing. Jessica is employed with the Burlington (Iowa) School
District as an English and writing instructor as well as the school's
yearbook and newspaper coordinator.
Christian Lutz '96 was a graduate senator in the University
of Kansas Student Senate as well as a representative in the Graduate
Assembly during the 1999-2000 school year. On May 21, 2000, he graduated
from the university with a master of science in education degree
in higher education with an emphasis in student affairs. Christian
has accepted the position of international studies advisor at the
University of Indianapolis, a private four-year comprehensive institution.
It can be considered one of Southwestern's sister schools as it,
too, is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Brian Pettey '96 and Kristen Martin '98 were married May
27, 2000. Brian is the owner of Brian Thomas Robotics of Winfield.
Kristen is an engineer with Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita.
LaTaunia Anderson '97 reports that she has been living
in Las Vegas (a.k.a., city of Lost Wages) for about a year and a
half, but not engaging in gambling too much. She is working at Mojave
Mental Health (a division of Nevada Family Practice). LaTaunia is
engaged and planning to be married in spring 2001.
Brandon Sommer '97 has been named soccer coach at Winfield
High School. He is assuming that duty in addition to teaching mathematics.
Ticia (Kimmons) Bennett '98 spent part of the summer serving
as interim pastor at Attica United Methodist Church.
Lisa (Ashenfelter) Braun '98, graduate assistant athletic
trainer and assistant women's basketball coach at Southwestern College,
has been offered an athletic training internship with the Portland
Fire of the Women's National Basketball Association. She will work
with head coach Linda (Adams) Hargrove '75.
Sam Ellis '98 has recently been appointed web designer
with 1st Global.com.
Christy Grealis '98 has left the Country Music Association
after being on the staff there for 2½ years. She now is national
publicity coordinator at Warner Brothers/Reprise Records.
Scott Lowe '98 and Dana Campbell were married July 15, 2000.
Scott is employed with Cates Supply in Winfield. Dana is a student
at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. She will soon begin
her year of clinical rotations and plans to graduate in May 2001.
Katherine Scraper '98 was selected Wal-Mart Teacher of the
Year 2000. The honor included a $500 stipend for classroom materials.
Katherine teaches first grade in the mornings and Reading Recovery
in the afternoons at Frances Willard Elementary School in Arkansas
City.
Amy Turner '98 and Justin Owens were married July 15, 2000.
Amy is beginning her second year of teaching fifth grade at Saint
Joseph Catholic School in Wichita. Justin is a management information
systems student at Wichita State University.
Ginger Wilcox '98 graduated from Emporia State University
in May 2000 with an MBA degree. She is employed at Payless Shoe
Source World Headquarters in Topeka as a merchandise distribution
analyst.
Katherine Doyle '99 and Travis Scott were married June
18, 2000, at the Flamingo Hilton Chapel, Las Vegas, Nev. Charles
"CD" East '99, Staff Sgt., 22nd Security Forces Squadron, information
management craftsman, United States Air Force, has been selected
to attend Officer's Training School. After OTS he will make a transition
to the space and missile career field.
Elva Saenz '99 and Jake Boling were married May 20, 2000.
Elva is employed by Community Creative Living in Winfield. Jake
is a student in Southwestern College's professional studies program
and is employed by Raytheon Aircraft in Wichita.
Mickey Shaffer '99 was the commencement speaker at Caldwell
(Kan.) High School. He is currently employed at KAKE-TV in Wichita.
At KAKE his main duties include reporting and filing sporting events
as well as occasionally anchoring the sports broadcast.
Erik Snyder '99 and Corina Carroll were married May 20,
2000. Erik is a manager at Sherwin Williams. Corina is an administrative
assistant at Boeing.
Mike Werne '99 and Natasha Stephens were married May 6,
2000. Mike is a paramedic with Sedgwick County. Natasha is a manager
with Victoria's Secret.

April Chlumsky '00 received the Scholarly Achievement Award
from the American Bible Society (ABS). April has been accepted for
graduate studies at Duke University.
Matthew Dawson '00, Tech. Sgt. 22nd ARW Manpower and Organizations,
NCOIC of logistics element, U. S. Air Force, has been selected to
attend Officer's Training school. Upon completion of OTS he will
return to the manpower and organizations career field.
Amber Logan '00 traveled to Europe in May 2000. For the
2000-01 school year she has accepted a position with Ingles Elementary
School in Wichita. Ingles is an innovative, for-profit school within
the Wichita school system. It stresses ethnic studies and foreign
languages.
Dana McDorman '00 is working for Pioneer Financial Service
in the human resources department.
Amy Sherffius '00 reports that in January 2000 she was
hired by Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center as a burn
technician. Amy assesses the degree and percentage of burns, does
daily dressing changes, attends burn conferences and classes, and
does the burn dressings for post-operative patients.
Amy Monical '01 has been chosen to receive the 2000 NAIA
AI Ortolani Student Athletic Trainer scholarship. She will receive
the $500 during her senior year. Amy is a student athletic trainer
involved in an internship at Southwestern College and plans to take
the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification
exam in April.
Deb Schmidt '01 is the newest member of the library staff
at Southwestern College. She will oversee the library's journal
collection and will also work with Terry Quiett '94 in the
Center for Academic Technology.

Lori (Everhart) Oathout '85 and her husband, Scot, are
the parents of a son, Jared Scot. Born May 13, 2000, he weighed
8 pounds 4 ounces and was 21 inches long.
Jeff and Shari (Drennan) Wampler '85 '89 are the parents
of a daughter, Kayla Leigh. Born June 23, 2000, she weighed 8 pounds
8 ounces and measured 19¾ inches long.
David and Jeri (Eis) Carson '86 '86 are the parents of a
new daughter. Born May 30, 2000, Cori Lynn has two older brothers,
David (8) and Jared (5).

a third son, Brady Matthew. Born July 17, 2000, he joins brothers
Alex and Andrew. Clif and Wendy (Dolsen) Coleman '92 '90 are the
parents of a new daughter, Chandler. Born June 10, 2000, she weighed
7 pounds 11 ounces and measured 19½ inches long. Her brothers are
Kieran (3) and Kerry (1½).
Shane and Missy (Thomas) Abbott '93 '91 have a new baby
girl. Tara Nicole was born April 14, 2000. She weighed 8 pounds
and 12 ounces and was 19¼ inches long at birth.
Alane (Dinsmore) McNutt '93 and her husband, Greg, are the
parents of a son, Brodie Alan. Born May 21, 2000, he weighed 7 pounds
1 ounce and was 19½ inches long. He joins big sister Kolbi Rebeca
(2½).
Seth Bate '93 and Jenny Muret Bate '96 are the parents of
a daughter, Emma Eleni Muret Bate. Born July 5, 2000, she weighed
8 pounds 6 ounces and was 20½ inches long.
Gary Dick '93 and LeAnn Patten are the parents of a son,
Dalton Wayne. He was born May 1, 2000. Tosca (Sullivan) and Britt
Ford '93 '94 are the parents of a son, Logan Johnston. Born Jan.
26, 2000, he weighed in at 4 pounds 8 ounces and measured 19 inches

Rosann (Dennett) Meier '94 and her husband, Mitch, are the
parents of a son, Hunter James. Born July 9, 2000, he weighed 8
pounds 11 ounces and was 20¾ inches long. He joins a sister, Mallory
Leeann (2½).
Korinna (Reever) Velasquez '94 and her husband, Robert,
are the parents of a son, Robbie Frank III. Born Sept. 17, 1999,
he weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces. He joins a sister, Dakota Mae (3).
Kandace Howell-Worsham '96 and her husband, Rodney,
admission counselor at Southwestern College, are the parents of
a son, Caleb Rhys. Born June 7, 2000, he weighed 7 pounds 10½ ounces
and was 19¾ inches long. Lori (Neal) and Jason Stockton '96 '01
are the parents of a son. Born May 30, 2000, he weighed 9 pounds
6 ounces.
Amanda (Folck) and Eli Jantz '97 '96 celebrated the birth
of their son, Jack Quinn, on March 27, 2000. He weighed 7 pounds
13½ ounces and was 19½ inches long.
Jennifer (Fisk) Meyer '98 and her husband, Michael, are
the parents of a daughter, Alyssa Lynn. She was born July 24, 2000.
Lisa (Milner) Phillips '99 and her husband, Mike, are the

Esther (Kiser) Felt '27 died May 27, 2000.
Blanche (Hight) Miller '28 died June 1, 2000, at the age
of 93. She had been an elementary school teacher in Alaska for over
20 years.
Bryce Gleckler '30 died May 26, 2000, at the age of 92.
He taught high school in Dodge City from 1930 to 1946 and then taught
at Dodge City Community College from 1946 to 1973. He served as
acting dean of the college for the 1958-59 school year. Survivors
include a brother, Don Gleckler '34.
Nadine (McFaddin) Harrison '30 died June 22, 2000. An avid
golfer and tireless worker in women's golf associations, she is
survived by her husband, Fred.
Harold Thomson '31 died June 6, 2000, at the age of 89.
He had been an optician and credit manager before joining the Army.
He was a first lieutenant adjutant during World War II and earned
a Bronze Star. Later he was an organizer of and benefits officer
for the personnel department at the University of Colorado. He retired
in 1970. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn.
Waldo Zerger '32 died June 16, 2000. A U. S. Army veteran
and appliance store employee, he was 85. Survivors include his wife,
Jane.
Charles "Ed" Dietrick '33 died April 20, 2000. After graduation
from Southwestern he moved to Kingman, Kan., where he owned and
operated a laundry. Later in Salina, Ed worked in various facets
of the consumer loan business and served two years as Consumer Loan
Commissioner under appointment by Kansas Governor Fred Hall. In
the 1970s Ed returned to Winfield and was self-employed here for
many years refurbishing antique furniture and selling business supplies.
Maravene (Phillips) Clark '34 died June 9, 2000. She was
87. Harriett (Kelley) Page '36 died July 31, 2000. A homemaker,
she was 85. Survivors include her sisters, Margaret (Kelley)
Bumpas '33 and Patricia (Kelley) Moreland '38.
Wayne Holecek '37 died June 10, 2000. A retired real estate
and insurance agent, he was 85. Survivors include a brother, Harley
'38.
Stanley Graham '38 died May 6, 2000. A retired Naval Reserves
Support unit commander, he was 85. Survivors include his wife, Maurine.
Elinor (Lawrence) Grove '40 died May 13, 2000. She was 85.
Elinor had been an educator in USD 465 Winfield. Survivors include
sons Larry '64 and David '66.
Lloyd Harp '41 died July 21, 2000. A retired owner of Furniture
Mart (Liberal, Kan.) and a high school basketball coach, retiring
in 1970, he was 85. Survivors include his wife, Elsie (Baty)
'37, and daughters, Marjorie (Harp) McClure '65 and Margaret
(Harp) Davie '66.
Lois (Ingram) Lappin '43 died July 20, 2000. A homemaker
and former Kingman County (Kan.) teacher, she was 78. Survivors
include a brother, Wesley Ingram '37.
Martha (Youle) Brown '45 died April 12, 2000. A homemaker,
she was 76. Survivors include her husband, Winton; their daughter,
Marci (Brown) Monteith '71; a sister, Alice (Youle) Wilson
'37; and nephew, Robert Parsons, '75.
Neal Dillman '46 died June 11, 2000, at the age of 81. A
student at Southwestern from 1937 to 1940, Neal's education was
interrupted for five years while he was in the Army during World
War II. He returned in January 1956, and graduated with that class.
He enjoyed playing football and basketball at Southwestern. He taught
and coached for nine years at Moundridge and Newton, (Kan.), and
Kermit and Borger (Texas). Neal returned to Kermit as high school
principal from 1955 to 1960. He was superintendent of Muleshoe ISD
from 1960 to 1980, when he retired from school teaching and administration
after 35 years. One of the elementary schools in Muleshoe was named
in his honor after retirement. He also was selected Administrator
of the Year by the Texas Classroom Teacher Association, and Educator
of the Month by the Texas School Business magazine. Survivors include
his wife of 52 years, Esther Marie.
Clair Thornton '48 died May 18, 2000. The co-owner of AC
Titles Co. and a retired bricklayer, he was 76. Survivors include
his wife, Ann.
Doris (McBeth) Wehmeier '50 died Jan. 17, 2000. A registered
nurse she devoted much of her energies to raising six children and
assisting her husband, Walter, in pastoring Lutheran churches in
Oklahoma, New York, and Kansas. Walter survives.
Robert Everly '52 died June 26, 2000, at the age of 75.
A second lieutenant in the Air Force during World War II, he served
as a navigator. Later he taught in Waverly, Kan., and then began
work with Boeing in Wichita, retiring from Boeing in Seattle.
Johnny R. Barker '53 died June 15, 2000, at the age of
68. Survivors include his wife, Wanda, with whom he had operated
the Attica (Kan.) locker for 42 years. Also surviving are sons,
John A. '82, Steve '81 and Donald '85.
Olive (Russell) Burris '55 died April 26, 2000, at the
age of 93. She had been a teacher at Mulvane and Wellington, Kan.
During 1979 she had been president of the Kansas Retired Teachers
Association.
Edward Hankins '56 died July 3, 2000, at the age of 67.
He taught and coached in Humboldt and Abilene then moved to the
Kansas State Department of Education in Topeka where he was a vocational
education specialist. He retired in 1995. Survivors include his
wife, Rose Marie.
Georgia "Jo" (Lilleston) Boggs '65 died July 5, 2000. She
was 85.
Ronald Hickerson '65 died May 22, 2000. He had worked in
all aspects of the ski industry. His last years were spent coaching
and teaching tennis in Arizona and Grand Junction, Colo. Survivors
include his wife, Carolyn; his parents, Lawrence and Hazel (Deever)
Hickerson '34 '35, and a sister, Shirley (Hickerson) Thompson
'59.
Patrice (Woner) Dobbins '74 died May 29, 2000. A teacher
at Lincoln Elementary School in Wellington, Kan., she was 48. Survivors
include her husband, Thomas.
Joe Norton '79 died May 8, 2000, at the age of 58. He had
worked at Boeing and was the former owner of Tiger Travel Trailers,
Town and Country Mobile Homes, and Norton Homes. Survivors include
his life partner, Maggie Clark.
Jack Williams '83 died April 19, 2000. A retired United
Methodist pastor, he served chuches in Leon and Rosalia, Kan., in
the late 1970s.
Joan (Preston) Renek '87, '91 died July 31, 2000. The former
faculty assistant for the social science division at Southwestern
College, she was 76. She had also held such positions as secretary
to the head of the psychology department at Wichita State University,
special events coordinator for the Wichita Chamber of Commerce,
director of housing and chamber manager at Lindsborg, manager of
the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and administrative assistant
of the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce. She had also worked at
Wedgestone Press and Cowley County District Court. Survivors include
her husband, Harry.
Elizabeth Cowan, wife of Leonard Cowan '37, died
July 1, 2000, at the age of 81. She had been a music teacher in
public schools in Protection, Garden City, and Wichita as well giving
private vocal and piano lessons.
Eloise Graham, widow of H. Allen Graham '41, died
May 19, 2000. She was 74.
William Sympson, widower of Sarah Jo (Bergdall) Sympson
'41, died May 21, 2000, at the age of 83. While he had worked
for the Winfield State Bank, Wallingford Elevator and the Winfield
Daily Courier, he is probably best remembered by the residents of
Cowley County as Winfield's Santa Claus.
James Ito, husband of Grace (Kawakami) Ito '50, died
March 30, 2000.
Carrol Felker, husband of Hazel (Groom;Wamsley) Felker
'62, died June 7, 2000. A retired farmer and USD 259 science
teacher, he was 88.
Ray Parsons, husband of Mary Ann (Dudley) Parsons '64,
died May 9, 2000, at the age of 77. Along with farming, Ray worked
at Beech Aircraft and Raytheon Aircraft as a receiving clerk until
he retired in 1985. Other survivors include a son, Del Parsons,
and a daughter, Debra Schwyhart.
Marcia Larsen, wife of Ed Larsen '97, died Aug.
7, 2000. She had been a teacher in the Winfield school district.

Mary Blake, executive assistant to the president at Southwestern
College, and her husband, Gene, were one of the families kind enough
to open their home and garden for the Winfield Area Habitat for
Humanity tour. Proceeds from the sale of tickets for the tour were
used to help fund the Habitat house currently under construction.

Duane Rankin, former assistant football coach and head cross
country coach at Southwestern College, recently retired as superintendent
of schools of USD 102 (Cimarron) after 19 years of service to that
district. In the course of his career, Duane taught in Parker, Ariz.
He then came to Southwestern College where he taught health, physical
education, and recreation in addition to coaching. In the fall of
1978 he took the position of K-12 principal at Protection, where
he remained for three years before moving to Cimarron, in 1981 to
take the position of 7-12 principal. Six years later he moved up
to superintendent of schools. In retirement, Duane and his wife,
Sheryl, hope to camp at every state park in Kansas.

Cheryl Rude, assistant professor of leadership studies and
director of Leadership Southwestern, received First National Bank
of Winfield's First Citizen Award for May 2000. Cheryl has been
active in First United Methodist Church, Winfield, and various leadership
activities in Winfield and Cowley County.
Reza Sarhangi, associate professor of mathematics and statistics,
was recently featured on KAKE-TV, channel 10, Wichita. One of "Hatteberg's
People" on the ten o'clock news, he was recognized for his work
with the Bridges Conference on the Southwestern campus. "Bridges:
Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science" attracts internationally-known
mathematicians, artists, and musicians.

Kristi Singer, former campus visit coordinator in the admission
office at Southwestern College, and her husband, Tim, are the parents
of a son, Jordan Marshall. Born June 1, 2000, he weighed 8 pounds
6 ounces and was 20 inches long. He joins two brothers, Mason (4)
and Evan (1).
Jim Strand, retired professor of music at Southwestern College,
has accepted a position as organist of a church in Port Elizabeth,
Maine, a city near Portland. He and his wife, Carlyn, moved there
in August.
Jodi Thomas has joined the Office of Admission as a counselor.
She grew up in Marion and is a May 2000 graduate of Kansas State
University where she majored in mass communications. Jodi will be
covering the northeast corner of Oklahoma, southeast Kansas, Arkansas,
and Missouri.
Lois Torrance, former library assistant at Southwestern
College and volunteer at Horsefeathers and Applesauce and journalism
and student publications, was one of the readers for the 2000 Kansas
Voices Writing Contest. The readers "pre-judged," or screened, the
many entries that were received before judges decided upon the winners
of the contest.
Julie Voelker, affiliate instructor in drama and manager
of costumes and events, left Southwestern College in August 2000.
She will be moving to Eugene, Ore., to complete an arts administration
degree.
Rachel Workman, coordinator of Sutton Center, has completed
coursework required for Certified Basic Herbalist from the Natural
Health School in Bridgeton, Mo.

Terry and Miriam Allison are the parents of a son, Matthew
David, born June 2, 2000. Terry is a pastor with the Graham County
United Methodist Parish.
Warren Andreas was among 14 individuals recently recognized
for meritorious contribution by the Kansas Bar Association. Warren
was presented with the Professionalism Award at the association's
118th annual meeting in Topeka, June 8, 2000. The honor recognizes
an individual who has practiced law for 10 years or longer and who,
by his or her conduct, honesty, integrity and courtesy best exemplifies,
represents, and encourages other lawyers to follow the highest standards
of the legal profession as identified by the KBA Hallmarks of the
Profession.
Laird Bauer died July 12, 2000. He is survived by his wife,
Pam Gibson-Bauer, who is on the staff of Old Mission United Methodist
Church, Fairway.
Kevin and Jana Baxter have moved to Great Bend. Both United
Methodist pastors, they will be serving First United Methodist Church
and Trinity United Methodist Church. As co-pastors of each church
they plan not only to serve the two congregations, but also to have
a community-based ministry. Their son, Kye '02, is a student at
Southwestern College.
Meredith Beatty died July 29, 2000, at the age of 87.
Jack and Aileen Butters recently celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary with a family gathering. Jack co-owned the Otasco store
in Winfield for several years and retired from the Winfield Correctional
Facility as chief of security in 1996. Aileen worked for the city
of Winfield for 27 years.
Harold "Shorty" Cline died July 20, 2000, at the age of
93. A farmer and rancher, he is survived by his wife, Lucille.
Charles Cryderman has been appointed pastor of the Kiowa
United Methodist Church. He moved to Kiowa from Smith Center.
Geraldine Evans, former teacher and homemaker, died May
14, 2000. She was 97.
Charles Garey died July 13, 2000. A retired farmer, he was 86.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia.
Bertha Hayden died July 26, 2000, at the age of 88. Active
in her church and the Winfield community, she was the July 1996
recipient of the Winfield First Citizen Award.
Dale Honeck has been appointed principal of Hillsboro High
School. He is the father of Amy '01.
Gertrude Hurst died May 31, 2000, at the age of 91. She
was the widow of Clyde Hurst, former superintendent of buildings
and grounds at Southwestern College. Survivors include a son, Robert
T. Hurst '72.
Thelma Isaac died May 8, 2000. A homemaker and volunteer,
she was 86.
Merle Jordan died June 19, 2000. A retired farmer and rancher,
he was 95.
Elsie Kittle died July 17, 2000. A homemaker, she was 86.
Survivors include her husband, Wesley.
Andrew Larson Sr. died May 7, 2000. A farmer in Gray, Finney,
and Ford Counties, he was 91. Survivors include his wife, Jean,
and children Andrew Larson Jr. and Karin (Larson) Henkle '56.
Greg Lindenberger has been ordained deacon in the United
Methodist Church and will serve the South Haven and Mount Hope United
Methodist Churches. He is completing his seminary education at Phillips
Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Okla.
Jill Long was awarded First National Bank of Winfield's
First Citizen Award for June 2000. The selection is made monthly
to honor a person who has expended significant time and effort to
improve the quality of life in Winfield.
Shirley Lundy was honored April 27, 2000, for her work with
the Boy Scouts. On that date she became the first woman to be presented
the Vigil Honor, the highest rank in the Order of the Arrow, a Boy
Scout service organization. While her own four sons, among them
Kent '90, attained the rank of Eagle Scout she worked with
various groups including Troop 614 at Mount Vernon United Methodist
Church in Wichita to committees at the national level. She always
appears at meetings with freshly baked cookies and is known by grade-schoolers
and Scoutmasters alike as "Mom."
Don McCormick has been appointed to Prairie View United
Methodist Church. He is also the Sunflower Parish youth director
and a candidate for the ministry.
Dale Moreland died May 27, 2000. A retired Boeing Wichita
facilities manager, he was 72. Survivors include his wife, Roberta.
Lynn Mork, wife of Jeff Mork '94, graduated from
Kansas State University in May 2000. She received a doctor of veterinary
medicine degree.
John Morton has resigned from his position as superintendent
of schools for USD 465 Winfield. He has accepted a similar position
with USD 373 Newton.
Bruce Mousley died July 5, 2000. A retired experimental
planner at Raytheon Aircraft Co., he was 69. Survivors include his
wife, Barbara; sons, Tim '78, Randy '81, Jeff (current student);
and daughter, Robin '84.
Sheryle Ohm has been elected president of the USA 465 Winfield
Board of Education.
Elizabeth Ontjes died June 21, 2000. A prominent donor to
the Hutchinson (Kan.) Public Library, she was 88. Survivors include
her husband, Max, and their son, Sam '67.
Orpha Plagens died May 29, 2000. A retired Boeing Wichita
switchboard and teletype supervisor, she was 86.
Diora (Hughes) Salley died May 23, 2000, at the age of 100.
She was a retired surgical nurse from Liberal. In her leisure hours
she had been a master iris judge and a national flower show judge.
Reit Stonger is the new pastor at the Douglass and Rock
United Methodist Churches. She is moving from the Haviland United
Methodist Church. Hazel Tilbury died May 24, 2000. A retired Sears
credit department employee, she was 76.
Mildred Voge died July 24, 2000. A homemaker, she was 67.
Survivors include her husband, Dale. Mabel (Eaton) Walker died May
29, 2000. A homemaker and registered nurse, she was 93. Survivors
include a son, Gerald '64, and daughters, Sue (Walker)
Breneman '56 and Ann (Wilson) Bedinghaus '66.
Doug and Jody Weaver celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary
with a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia.
Melvin and Mona Winger were honored recently by Saint Paul
School of Theology. The main administration and classroom building
at the school is now called the Kansas-Winger Building in their
honor. Rev. Lovett H. Weems Jr. president of the seminary said,
"the new name will serve as a reminder of the original generation
of Kansans that built the building and of another generation that
has renewed it for continued service in a new century." Melvin is
a trustee of the seminary.
