SC Women’s Soccer Team Named Champions of Character

Winfield, Kan., March 7, 2007 — The Southwestern College women’s soccer team has been awarded the NAIA Champions of Character team award.

According to Brad Sexson, Champions of Character representative at Southwestern, the women’s soccer team was chosen for this award because of their commitment to the five core character values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Head coach Joe Wood says that his team participates in supporting various campus activities and sporting events as well as volunteering in the community to train and assist the coaching of youth soccer teams.

“Not only do these outings promote a strong bond, but it is our way of showing the same support that our fans have given us during the season,” Wood says.

The NAIA developed the Champions of Character program in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society.  The NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive youth development in athletics and academics.

Southwestern College is a private institution granting undergraduate and graduate degrees and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.  More than 1,600 students attend classes at the main Winfield campus; at seven professional studies sites in three states; or online at www.sckans.edu.
