Department of English at Southwestern College

Today (May 31, 2018) the AAUP issued, jointly with Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), the a statement on the liberal arts, saying in part:

... Students majoring in literature, art, philosophy, and history are routinely considered unemployable in the technology and information economy, despite the fact that employers in that economy strenuously argue that liberal arts majors make great tech-sector workers precisely because they are trained to think critically and creatively, and to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.

At Southwestern College, we pride ourselves on proving the utmost quality in the English Department. Our alumni are successfully prepared to pursue a wide range of employment opportunities in teaching, medicine, law, journalism, technological studies, publishing, entertainment, public relations, non-profits, and many others.

In the English major, there are three emphasis areas: Creative Writing, Secondary Education, and Literature. With rigorous coursework that covers literary works from the ancient classics to the present day, the degree guides students to enhance their own talents and explore insights into the human condition. A degree in English develops the ability to communicate effectively, conduct thorough research, and ultimately think critically.

The comprehensive skills acquired as an English major will be an asset in any work environment. Research demonstrates that students who major in English have a  higher employment rate than other graduates with more technical degrees. More than 95% of Southwestern College English graduates find employment in their field within one year of graduation.
