SC Media Students Earn Awards from Kansas Collegiate Media Contest

Six members of the Southwestern College student media staffs won several awards in the spring 2020 Kansas Collegiate Media contest.

Tessa Castor, Clearwater senior, took first place in both editorial writing ("Homecoming is everyone's time") and feature writing ("Ferris finds acceptance at Southwestern"). She also earned a second place in review writing and an honorable mention in feature writing. Castor has served as editor in chief for the past three years.

Mallory Graves, Ardmore, Okla., sophomore, received third place in an audio feature in the multimedia storytelling division. She also earned third place in sports photography and an honorable mention in news writing. Graves and Lathe Cobb, Rose Hill freshman, were recognized with an honorable mention for a front page design they created together.

Victoria Butler, Winfield, a December 2019 graduate, earned second place in front page design and Lex Gouyton, Azle, Texas, junior, took third place in headline writing.

Drake Vittitow, Blanchard, Okla., junior, was recognized with an honorable mention for review writing.

The Collegian online staff earned a bronze medal in the overall competition.

Due to the COVID-19 Virus, the awards were presented during a virtual celebration on April 10. Stacy Sparks, associate professor of journalism, serves as faculty adviser for The Collegian.
