Campers Enjoy Fun and Fundamentals at SC Men’s Basketball Camp
The Southwestern College Men’s Basketball Camp wrapped up another successful four-day session, bringing together 45 campers for a memorable blend of basketball fundamentals and community building.
Held at the historic Stewart Field House from May 27–30, the camp was a collaborative effort between Southwestern College and the Winfield Recreation Commission — a long-standing partnership that coach Matt O’Brien deeply values.
“Thankful to partner with the Winfield Rec who does so much to provide awesome opportunities to stay active to so many in our community,” O’Brien said. “Our long-term partnership has been great.”
Campers received instruction in key basketball skills such as shooting, ball handling, and team play, all while enjoying a high-energy environment designed for fun and friendship.
“We try to make the camp as fun as possible, with the mindset that we are going to teach the fundamentals. I hope the campers had fun and learned the fundamentals along the way,” O’Brien added.
Nigel John and Kaiden Abasolo, members of the men’s basketball team, stepped into coaching roles, offering hands-on guidance and leadership.
“It’s good for the players to see the other side and have a chance to coach and have a chance to give back to the sport that has given so much to them,” said O’Brien.
To cap off the week, several campers were recognized for their hard work and improvement. O’Brien emphasized the importance of community engagement at the core of the camp’s mission.
“It is exciting to meet new people from Winfield and surrounding communities who are becoming fans or already are fans of Southwestern Athletics,” O’Brien said.
