J.K. Campbell to Speak at Honors Convocation
J.K. Campbell, retired Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dean of the Faculty, will be the featured speaker at Southwestern College’s annual Honors Convocation Thursday, April 16, at 4 p.m., in the Richardson Performing Arts Center. There is no admission charge and the public is welcome to attend.
The convocation will also include recognition of the 2026 Masterbuilders, Student Government Association, faculty and staff citations, members of the Dean’s Honor Roll, a musical interlude by the SC Singers, and the presentation of an honorary degree to Kathy Mignone. Known as “Miss Kathy,” Mignone will receive a bachelor of arts degree in general studies. Mignone has worked in the Southwestern College cafeteria for over 35 years and during her tenure has remained a dedicated supporter and friend to students, faculty, and staff.
Campbell retired in December 2025, but continues to serve Southwestern College in a part-time role in the Office of Institutional Advancement. Prior to retiring, Campbell served Southwestern as Vice-President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. During his 7 ½ -year tenure at SC, Campbell also served as the Education Division Chair and was an Associate Professor of Education.
He is a former public-school administrator and teacher, taking his first teaching position in Winfield and serving in public education for 31 years, largely in Cowley County. Prior to joining Southwestern College, Campbell served as the USD 465 Winfield Superintendent of Schools for seven years and has developed expertise in school leadership, business and operations, and early childhood education. During his tenure in district administration, Campbell served on the Executive Board of the Kansas Association of School Business Officials and is a past-president of that organization.
Campbell received a Doctorate in Education Leadership, a Master of Educational Administration & Supervision, and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Wichita State University, along with a Master of Science in Environmental Studies from Friends University.
In retirement, Campbell is enjoying time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
