Active Assailant/ (ALERRT) Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training

Southwestern College, in partnership with the Winfield Police Department, has adopted the ALERRT theory of surviving an active assailant on campus.  The Director of Security coordinates with the Winfield Police Department to present training in incoming first-year students annually.

ALERRT is an acronym for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.  This system was created in 2004 by Texas State University and other law enforcement agencies to provide research-based training in the event of an active assailant.  ALERRT incorporates the Avoid, Deny, Defend (A.D.D.) strategy:

A.D.D. Strategy

AVOID starts with your state of mind.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Have an exit plan.
  • Move away from the source of the threat as quickly as possible.

DENY when getting away is not possible.

  • Keep distance between you and the threat.
  • Turn the lights off and lock the door if possible.
  • Create barriers to prevent or slow down the threat from getting to you.
  • Remain out of sight and quiet by hiding behind large objects and silencing your phone.

DEFEND because you have the right to protect yourself.

  • If you cannot Avoid or Deny, be prepared to defend yourself.
  • Be aggressive and committed to your actions.
  • Do not fight fairly!

THIS IS ABOUT SURVIVAL!
