Optional Side Trips

Included in the Semester in China Program are visits to several UNESCO World Heritage sites including the ancient villages of Xidi and Hongcun, and the beautiful Huangshan Mountains. Optional side trips to Hangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, and the Great Wall are planned.

Hangzhou, located about halfway between Huangshan and Shanghai, is known for its large lake, West Lake, and its natural beauty. It is often referred to as China’s most beautiful city. West Lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more information and pictures see:

Shanghai, where west meets east, is a world class city with American fast food restaurants, subways, some of the tallest modern buildings in the world, centuries old neighborhoods, museums, and parks. It is where China shows off its booming economy. For more information and pictures see:

Beijing is the capital of China. It is home to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. The Summer Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of gardens and palaces that served as the summer retreat for the Qing emperors. For more information and pictures see:

The Great Wall of China is thousands of miles long. It was built to protect the northern borders of China against invasions from various nomadic groups. There are several sections of the wall close to Beijing that have been restored.  For more information and pictures see:
