Internships

For traditional undergraduates and for adults making a career change, gaining relevant experience is critical.  Individuals with relevant experience on a resume have a greater chance of obtaining professional employment.

Companies may offer structured internship programs or they may only offer part time working opportunities.  There are many ways to approach the issue of gaining experience while in college:

  • Working part time during school and in the summer
  • Volunteer work- either in a business or a non-profit agency (remember that even non-profit agencies need accounting, management, and computer science assistance) This is a great option for career changers!
  • Formal Internship program

It is important for students to brainstorm and think about the skills and experience they would like to gain during an internship.  Finding an internship is an art form in that students should access their own values and determine through research what company in which they would like to intern.

It is not simply just finding any internship, students should think through issues such as do they need to be paid, location of the internship and how many hours a week they would like to work.

Below is a list of company sites that can offer structured internship programs through their career sites under university or college recruiting:  However, students should feel free to contact any company in which they they would like to work and inquire about internship or part time work opportunities.
