The first students on campus will be the freshmen, who will move into residence halls Sunday, Aug. 12, beginning at 9 a.m. Following a 3:15 p.m. Farewell Worship for students and parents, the newly-arrived freshmen will head to Builder Camp at Rock Springs Ranch near Junction City. They will return to Southwestern on Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Transfer and returning students will move in on Wednesday, Aug. 15

Fall Frenzy activities for new and returning students begin Thursday, Aug. 16. Fall Frenzy introduces new and returning students to the many aspects of Southwestern College.

Freshman Work Day will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 15. Since 1992, Southwestern College freshmen, along with Leadership Southwestern students and faculty and staff, have blanketed the city of Winfield on the first Saturday the freshmen arrive. The goal is to promote feelings of community among incoming students as well as a sense of belonging to the college and the city of Winfield. Freshman Work Day also strives to make a difference by establishing new relationships between the college and the community by assisting homeowners with indoor and outdoor home projects that they would otherwise not be able to complete.

The Fall Frenzy schedule includes:

• Sunday, Aug. 19, welcome back barbecue in the student center from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; welcome back worship in Messenger Recital Hall from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday Sundaes from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Java Jinx.

• Monday, Aug. 20, classes begin.

• Thursday, Aug. 23, annual Moundbuilding Ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Cole Plaza located at the bottom of the 77 Steps.

• Friday, Aug. 24, Opening Convocation at 11 a.m. in the Richardson Performing Arts Center.

Friends of Southwestern College are invited to attend the Moundbuilding Ceremony and the Opening Convocation.

For more information about Fall Frenzy, call Lai-L Clemons, (620) 229-6168.

<![CDATA[A Message from Dan Falk Concerning H1N1 Flu]]> http://www.sckans.edu/student-services/student-life-office/news/view/555 http://www.sckans.edu/student-services/student-life-office/news/view/555 Wash your hands. Cover your cough.

You’re going to hear these words over and over this fall as we go into flu season. This year, of course, we’re approaching that season with more caution because of the H1N1 strain of flu.

Southwestern College is watching this situation carefully, and keeping in touch with the local health department. They tell us that symptoms are usually mild for this new flu, but that 20%-40% of us will experience this flu within the next two years, and that 80% of these cases will be in persons 35 years old or younger.

Later this fall flu shots will be available and we’ll have on-campus immunization opportunities. Until then, though, watch for symptoms of the H1N1 flu:

 • fever over 100º
 • body aches
 • cough
 • sore throat
 • respiratory congestion
 • diarrhea and vomiting (in some cases)

If you have these symptoms, tell your resident assistant or visit the campus nurse Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday between noon and 1 p.m. You shouldn’t go back to class until you’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours.

And meanwhile, wash your hands and cover your cough.

Please contact me with your concerns.

Best regards,

Dan Falk, dean of students

<![CDATA[SC Receives Two AmeriCorps VISTAs]]> http://www.sckans.edu/student-services/student-life-office/news/view/82 http://www.sckans.edu/student-services/student-life-office/news/view/82 Beginning this fall, Southwestern College will receive two AmeriCorps VISTAs, SC Alum, Brae Johnson and recent OSU grad, Trista Wilson. Together they will work to expand Southwestern's service-learning programs.

Brae Johnson will spend the majority of her time working with the freshman in Leadership Southwestern as well as coordinating the M3C Education Award program. For more information on the $1,000 Education Award, contact Brae at Brae.Wood@sckans.edu

Trista Wilson will divide her time between the four service-learning programs, Discipleship, SIFE, Green Team and Leadership, as well as working with the Outreach Team to further develop their mission work. In addition, she will work with faculty to implement service-learning into existing curriculum. To find out how she might be useful to your course or team, contact Trista at Trista.Wilson@sckans.edu.
