BA Major in Music

As of Fall 2023, courses of study in Bachelor of Arts Major in Music have been discontinued for future enrollments. However, students currently enrolled in these programs will be supported as they complete their degrees or as they transition to other academic programs.

B.A. Major in Music

The Bachelor of Arts, Major in Music degree at Southwestern College is designed to encourage the study of music within the broad context of liberal arts.  It challenges students to attain an intellectual understanding of music, develop music performance skills, and expand overall musicianship skills.

Major requirements*

At least 54 hours in Music and Music Education to include:

  • MUS 230 Private Lessons (.5-3 hours) (minimum 8 hours)
  • MUS 261 Aural Skills and Sight Singing 2 (1 hour)
  • MUS 262 Aural Skills and Sight Singing 3 (1 hour)
  • MUS 311 Music Theory 4 (2 hours)
  • MUS 313 Music History 1 (3 hours)
  • MUS 314 Music History 2 (3 hours)

  • MUS 492 Sight Singing Proficiency (0 hour) (enroll semester of anticipated completion of proficiency requirement)
  • MUS 493 Piano Proficiency (0 hour) (enroll semester of anticipated completion of proficiency requirement) If not completed with MUS 227, enroll in MUS 230 M until complete.
  • MUS 494 Senior Recital/Project (enroll semester of anticipated completion of recital/project) (0 hour)
  • MUED215 Foundations in Music Education/Teaching (3 hours)

Enrollment (for credit) in at least one of the following large ensembles each semester (a minimum of eight hours in large ensembles is required to complete the degree):

  • MUS 150 Concert Band
  • MUS 160 Orchestra
  • MUS 233 A Cappella Choir
  • MUS 234 Jazz Band

Nine hours selected from the following:

  • MUS 150, 151, 160, 230, 233, 234 for a maximum of 4 hours. These hours are in addition to the requirements listed above for private lessons and large ensembles.

The National Association of Schools of Music (accrediting agency) requires 37 (minimum) non-music elective hours. These credits do not include Southwestern College’s general education requirements (33 hours).
