Strings Audition Requirements
For those seeking degrees in:
Bachelor of Music in Performance (Violin, Viola, Cello, or Double Bass)
Bachelor of Music in Music Education with an Orchestral/String emphasis
Bachelor of Arts in Music
Strings (Music Majors)
- 2-3 octave Major or Melodic Minor Scale
- One movement from standard literature such as a standard concerto, sonata, or concert piece (accompaniment not required)
Recommended standard literature:
- Suzuki Book 5 or above, any movement of unaccompanied Bach, pieces from the following instrument lists or repertoire of equivalent difficulty:
- Violin - Bach Concerto 1, Mozart Concerto 3, Accolay Concerto, Eccles Sonata, Barber Solos for Young Violinists Vol. 2 or above
- Viola - J.C. Bach Concerto, Vaughn Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves, Hoffmeister Concerto, Faure Apres un reve, Barber Solos for Young Violinists Vol. 2 or above
- Cello - Bach Arioso, Vivaldi Sonatas, Marcello Sonatas, Saint-Saens Allegro Appasionato, Saint-Saens The Swan
- Bass - Vivaldi Sonatas, Capuzzi Concerti, Beethoven Sonata 5, Rachmaninoff Vocalise
- Guitar - Sor's Estudio II, Terrega's Lagrima, and Gulliani's Allegro
Strings (Music Minors & Non-Major Music Activity Scholarships)
- 2-3 octave Major Scale; for guitar a G Scale in first or second position
- One movement of a solo work or an excerpt from a high school orchestra piece (accompaniment not required)
Recommended literature:
- High School Orchestra pieces should be Grade 4 or above.
- For Guitar: “El Rio” from the Mel Bay Method or “Prelude In G” from the Christopher Parkening Method.
