Position Summary:

This position is essential for the direct care of the residents living in the Kansas Veterans Home and required by regulation.  This direct care position will be responsible for providing assistance with activities of daily living for residents in the long term care living facility and other areas as assigned.  The incumbent of this position has access to protected health information (PHI) under the provisions of the Health Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Supports residents with activities of daily living (ADL) by assisting with oral care, dressing, bathing, toileting, transporting, turning, and nutrition.  Performs related routine activities such as changing linens and administering simple therapeutic treatments or procedures.  These tasks are performed according to established procedures to provide quality of care for each resident. Reports immediately, to the charge nurse, anything unusual regarding residents.  Answers call lights and provides assistance.  Obtains and records vital signs, height and weight as requested.  Turns and repositions every 2 hours.  Measures and records input and output.  Collects specimens.  Places and removes protective or assistive devices.  Checks all assigned residents at end of shift to make sure they are clean, dry and comfortable.Completes required documentation of ADL’s.  Keeps bedside and room clean and clear of clutter to provide aesthetic and safe environment.Puts away supplies, linens, etc.  Completes special assignments as requested by the charge nurse.

Licensing & Certification:
At the time of appointment, must possess a current certification by the Kansas Department of Aging as a Certified Nurse Aide pursuant to K.A.R. 28-39-165.

  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to function effectively under stress.
  • Ability to relate to residents with empathy and understanding and to maintain a caring attitude.
  • Must be able to identify basic differences in situations, as in an adverse reaction to medication, and determine the actions which need to be taken.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

• Assist students with opportunities to obtain the skills, credentials, resources and support necessary to become employed or volunteer
• Ability to select and develop appropriate instructional methods, skills and techniques attuned to people's cultural, multicultural or marginalized experiences.
• Serve as liaison and collaborate with case load teachers and work-based learning coordinator, to maintain the integrity of the students IEP.
• Facilitate transportation using Metro County Connect for students to and from worksites, as well assists and train students to schedule reoccurring rides.
• Assist and provide support for student behavior intervention including the development and implementation of student behavior plans.
• Facilitate regular bi-weekly discussions with your WBL students on caseload during which: strength and skill guidance, review WBL evaluation in sections to help students connect to IEP goals.
• Keep abreast of current changes affecting WBL paperwork, FTE, 30-day signatures and student Training Agreements. maintain up to date records for each WBL student and work-site needed for COUNT purposes.
• Coordinate YAP wide activities to incorporate equity throughout the WBL program (attending job fairs, creating campus learning and skill building opportunities for students).
• Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled workday.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with others including students, parents, peers, colleagues, employers, agencies, administrators, etc.
• Work with caseload teachers to update on a consistent basis (daily/weekly), student’s growth and effectiveness of meeting students individual IEP Goals and Objectives

Reports to: Supervising Teacher, Principal, and/or Director of Special Education Position

Summary: Under the direction of the Supervising Teacher, Building Principal, and/or the Director of Special Education, the Paraprofessional is an educational worker who performs many duties both individually with students and organizationally in the classroom. They may work closely with teachers on general classroom lessons or activities, or one-on-one with students who have special needs or disabilities. The Paraprofessional is essential to the learning experience, often being called upon to assist with the teaching of new concepts or translate information to help students better understand.

KPERS participation for this position is mandatory.
