SC Science Students Educate Local Youth

SC students in the education course, “Teaching Science in the Elementary School” designed Earth Day themed learning activities for students of Karen Podschun’s through the Maize Virtual School program. The Outdoor Sciencegroup had “unpacked” a miniature landfill (the glass container in the center of the table) and the students were creating their own mini-landfills to take home and observe. This was an activity designed by Faith Ferguson (SC student in the center). She had started the landfill about a month ago and as participants unpacked they were able to see how some things were just the same as they were when they were put in and how some were beginning to break down. Kari Blattner (right) in the photo presented an activity to help the students consider the danger of litter to animals called “A litter bit dangerous.” Catabrean Baumann, (left) opened the session with an activity to help students consider how they can be more Earth friendly through the use of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” habits.
