Student Success & Retention

Southwestern College is pleased to provide academic support services to our students.  The small size and private status of the college permit highly-individualized attention and personalized care for students who need academic support at any level.

Our mission is to provide a comprehensive and high-quality array of support services to students who want to enhance their educational experience and optimize their academic success. All services are provided at no cost to students.

ACADEMIC ADVISING FOR UNDECLARED STUDENTS

Students who have an undeclared major are advised by Mary Sites (Freshmen) or Steve Kramer (Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors) until they declare a major.  We explore with students their calling/ purpose/ vocation. 

ACADEMIC MENTORING & TUTORING

We support you when you have had a tough semester to help you get back on track.  FREE tutoring is offered through the SC Writing Center in the Library.  Math tutoring is available through the Quantitative Literacy Center and we direct students to Biology and Chemistry tutoring as well.  If students are looking for a tutor in another subject, we will help - at no charge. FRESHMAN/FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

We provide an advisor specifically for first year students.  She will help you with ANY needs that you may have.  If a freshman needs help, stop by our Center.  Email:  mary.sites@sckans.edu for more information.

QUIET STUDY CENTER

Our Center provides an additional option for student study.  If you're logging in study hours that can happen here.  We have a pot of coffee ready to serve you with a vending machine located right outside our study area.  You will be greeted with a smiling face and typically a basket of candy in a warm and supportive learning environment.

STUDENT WORK STUDY

We provide work-study opportunities for students who provide mentoring and tutoring support to other students. Email: steve.kramer@sckans.edu for more information.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT & ENCOURAGEMENT

Just don't know where to turn?  Do you have questions, but not sure who to ask? Students are encouraged to seek out one of our personable advisors for support and encouragement.  We refer students who need more in-depth help to our Wellness Coordinator maryann.smith@sckans.edu.  

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING ACTIVITIES

Our Success Center is all about building positive relationships with students, and we support them throughout their college career.  Our Center provides various opportunities that enhance a positive and successful college experience.  Sample activities have included:  20th Day Event, Motivational Speakers, Enrollment Support, Small Group Discussion Opportunities, and more!
